With over 1800 employees across six European sites EMBL integrates research groups and core facilities to foster world-class science. The Metabolomics Core Facility (MCF) at EMBL Heidelberg led by Michael Zimmermann provides state-of-the-art services for metabolite and lipid analysis to internal and external users. The facility combines cutting-edge analytical technologies including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry to support both targeted and untargeted metabolomics approaches. The MCF also develops new workflows and methodologies to address emerging biological questions. More information about the facility instrumentation services spectral libraries protocols and publications can be found on our website

Your role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to expand our expertise in NMR-based metabolomics and to contribute to both service provision and method development.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Metabolomics Core Facility your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and applying NMR-based metabolomics workflows to analyze diverse biological samples (e.g. cells bacteria tissues biofluids).
  • Collaborating with EMBL researchers and external users on metabolomics projects from experimental design to data interpretation
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of advanced protocols for sample preparation spectral acquisition and quantitative/qualitative analysis.
  • Integrating NMR data with complementary metabolomics platforms (e.g. LC-MS) for multi-omics approaches.
  • Publishing methods and scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at conferences.

You have

  • A PhD in chemistry biochemistry analytical sciences or a related discipline.

  • Solid hands-on experience in NMR spectroscopy applied to metabolomics.

  • Experience in sample preparation and analysis of a range of biological matrices.

  • Proven skills in metabolomics data processing spectral interpretation and statistical analysis.

  • Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment.

You may also have

  • Experience integrating NMR with other omics approaches (e.g. MS-based metabolomics proteomics).

  • Programming or scripting skills (e.g. Python R MATLAB) for data processing and analysis.
