Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Departments of Nutrition and Food Studies and Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montclair State University invite applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Food Science and Chemistry to join vibrant and growing programs serving diverse students and communities. The appointment includes research teaching and contributions to scholarly and leadership endeavors.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in food science including course development in food chemistry as well as laboratory-based courses in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies.

  • Teach introductory or other chemistry courses and / or laboratories in the existing Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry catalog.

  • Establish and maintain an active and externally-funded research program that bridges the disciplines of food science and chemistry or biochemistry ideally fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation between departments.

  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate research students in both departments.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive pedagogy.

  • Participate in departmental college and university service activities.

  • Advance research and service activities that strengthen and integrate the collaborative mission of the Nutrition and Food Studies and Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

This position is ideal for a candidate excited to work across disciplinary boundaries mentor a diverse student population and contribute to Montclairs expanding research capacity while developing a strong pedagogical foundation. Candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching commitment to inclusion and active scholarship in Food Chemistry or related areas are encouraged to apply.

This is a 10-month tenure-track joint appointment with a primary appointment in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies.

DEPARTMENTS OF NUTRITION AND FOOD STUDIES AND CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

The mission of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is to improve quality of life through a dynamic comprehensive and transdisciplinary curriculum innovative research and active community engagement in the holistic fields of food and nutrition. The Department offers bachelors masters and accelerated masters degrees and a post-bachelors dietetic internship. The dietetics program is an ACEND-accredited program that cultivates future registered dietitian nutritionists.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montclair State University offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in chemistry and related fields. Undergraduate students can pursue degree options including an American Chemical Society-certified BS in Chemistry a BS in Biochemistry a BS in Chemistry with teacher certification a BS in Chemistry with business concentration and a BS/PharmD articulation program with Rutgers University. Graduate students can pursue an MS in Chemistry an MS in Chemistry with a Biochemistry Concentration or an MS in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry. The department maintains a small-school community feel among majors while educating a large diverse student body. Faculty work together to create a supportive and inclusive environment that yields personal growth and high-quality educational opportunities for students many of whom are first-generation college students and / or from groups traditionally underrepresented in chemistry and other STEM fields. The department emphasizes hands-on learning and research providing students with opportunities to apply and go beyond their classroom knowledge in cutting-edge projects throughout the academic year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • A Ph.D. in Food Science Chemistry Biochemistry or related fields (advanced PhD students will be considered for the position with the expectation that the PhD will be earned by August 1 2026).

  • Sufficient education and / or experience-based background knowledge to teach courses in both the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

  • Candidates at the Associate Professor level should have evidence of a sustained extramurally funded program of research plus a strong track record of publications commensurate with rank.

PREFERRED:

  • Relevant postdoctoral and / or industry experience.

  • Primary research experience focused on Food Chemistry with a strong potential for external funding.

  • Demonstrated success teaching and mentoring students in higher education.

  • Experience working with diverse interdisciplinary teams on applied or community-based projects.
