Classified Personnel

Job Description: ParaeducatorStudent Supervision (Bus Line/Playground/Cafeteria) and Multilingual Support

Responsible to: Building Principal

Work Year: 180 Days / 3.50 hours per day supervision and 3.25 hours per day bilingual support

General: Under the supervision of building administration responsible for the supervision of children during noon lunchroom and playground activities; will promote appropriate activities so that students may interact in a safe environment

Minimum Qualification:

  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At a minimum AA degree or higher or two years of college (72 quarter credits) or ability to meet State-determined performance standards in reading math and writing (i.e. paraeducator assessment) if assignment includes building instructional support to students.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) skills may be required.
  • Previous successful experience of working with children.
  • Physical ability to walk and actively circulate in the lunchroom area and on playground in all weather conditions.
  • Valid First Aid certificate and CPR training preferred.
  • Must possess good time management skills.
  • Sensitivity towards children; ability to promote a childs self concept.
  • Must be able to function in a calm efficient courteous manner under stress and to exercise careful judgment confidentiality and tact in the performance of duties.
  • Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions and be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to work with staff and students including the monitoring and disciplining of student activities.
  • Ability to maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours specified under contract.
  • Must comply with all district policies and comply with the code of professional conduct.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Supervise students in the lunchroom and on the school playground or fieldhouse.
  • Maintain a harmonious atmosphere by encouraging peaceful resolution of conflicts.
  • Observe and direct students while actively circulating on the playground within assigned zone and in the lunch area; avoid congregating with other playground paraeducators.
  • Help students in developing good habits of sportsmanship; encourage and promote courtesy among students.
  • Visually check grounds and surroundings for hazards; report unauthorized activities and/or persons on school grounds. Personal cell phones must be secured and only used to report an emergency.
  • Responsible to carry a charged radio and first aid packet while on duty.
  • Report unsafe conditions or broken equipment to appropriate building administrator
  • Ensure student safety rule are obeyed; assist in the application of school site discipline policy and student conduct code
  • Organize group games and activities.
  • Encourage student responsibility for play equipment.
  • Direct movement of groups to and from playground lunchroom and classrooms in a safe and organized manner.
  • Assist students in lunchroom cleanup; enforce school procedures related to eating areas
  • Perform such other duties as from time to time may be required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; previous experience working with school-age children desirable. First Aid card and CPR training may be required.

Language Skills:
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of words. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff. Bilingual skills desirable.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Critical thinking and quick decision-making skills.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk and talk or hear. The employee is frequently is required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or control and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must regularly lift up to 40 lbs; individually push or pull up to 80 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The position is exposed to infection and injury at a greater risk than the average person.

While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with other workers and students. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed outdoors weather permitting.
