Job Description

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invite applications for a Research Fellow (post-doctoral scholar) position on the development and application of phase field methods for dynamic earthquake rupture simulations in the context of enhanced geothermal systems CO2 sequestration and earthquake physics.

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary school that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focused on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science ecology engineering and technology human ecology humanities and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability. For more details please view position is part of a new project hosted at the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) to push forward the use of phase field models in earthquake rupture dynamics and fluid-driven fracture processes. The project bridges applied geophysics and computational mechanics and is jointly developed with the Computational Mechanics Group at ETH Zurich.

The selected candidate will join the Computational Geophysics Lab of Asst. Prof. Luca Dal Zilio as a Research Fellow and work in close collaboration with Prof. Laura De Lorenzis Chair of the Computational Mechanics Group at ETH Zurich. This project aims to advance our understanding of shear fracture propagation in complex geological systems using next-generation computational tools. The research will focus on fault rupture dynamics energy dissipation and scale-dependent fracture processes with applications to both natural earthquakes and induced seismicity.

We are looking for a candidate with strong expertise in mechanics and physics-based modelling who is passionate about using computational tools to explore fracture and rupture in the Earths crust.
