Job Summary:

The Transportation Engineering Technician position Is responsible for performing field testing for Geotechnical exploration and collecting soil and rock samples. Performing routinemaintenance cleaning and safety inspections of all equipment utilized. Must follow ADOT and American Association of State Highway and Transportation (AASHTO) guidelines based on visible geology and basic surveying. This position will require overnight travel on a weekday basis (Typically Monday through Thursday).

This position may offer the ability to work remotely within Arizona based upon the departments business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

All work including remote work should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Job Duties:

Operates equipment obtains samples and performs field testing for geotechnical exploration including pavement coring and backhoe test pits. Load unload and transport heavy equipment for statewide transport. Assists crew with detailed specialized logging and classification of soil and rock samples. Physically walk project layout to survey and mark exploration locations and plot locations on plans.

Determine exploration locations based on visible geology available plan sheet data basic surveying ADOT and AASHTO explorations guidelines equipment access limitations and environmental restrictions. Locateand identify project parameters identifying possible unknown geological factors. Familiarization with SWPPP guidelines: properly marking job sites for Blue Stake and entering tickets in EXACTIX.

Conduct geotechnical exploration in compliance with the ADOT Statewide Permit for Discharge to Waters of the US. Ensure that all SWPPP and environmental impact statements archaeological green light and historical clearances are in order. Data entry of soil logs core logs and corresponding photos into the proper Google files. Perform date entry of test/sampling results into GEOFIELD database. Training-attend courses required to keep certifications updated testing techniques mandatory ADOT training job refreshing and technology transfer.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
*Surveying mapping and GPS equipment.
*Basic soils and rock materials field testing equipment related to logging and sampling materials.
*Safety regulations and work ethics.
*ADOT and AASHTO guidelines.

Skill in:
*Handling and maneuvering heavy loads on mountainous roads and tight areas for safe and legal transport of vehicles and heavy equipment.
*Reading engineering plans using cross sections and profiles to locate test pit sites or pavement coring locations.
*Operating heavy machinery.

Ability to:
*Load and unload equipment safely on and near State highways.
*Adapt to various jobsite conditions such as weather terrain and traffic for operation of heavy equipment.
*Assess adverse condition in terrain and anticipate potential problems in the investigative phase of projects.

Selective Preference(s):

5 years of extensive heavy equipment operation experience.
2 years of job-site travel experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current valid class-appropriate drivers license complete all required training and successfully pass all necessary drivers license record checks. The license must be current unexpired and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to drivers license record checks must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R.11).

Must hold a CDL Learners permit to interview.
Must obtains a Class A CDL with no automatic only restriction within 90 days of hire
