About the role

The Advisor Portfolio Controls team aims to build the best full-service investment management platform in the industry. The team operates as part of Betterment Advisor Solutions the all-in-one custodial platform for independent RIAs and this team focuses on empowering financial advisors with the tools to manage their clients portfolios. Our team holds a high amount of pride in building high-quality user experiences to simplify portfolio management for complex needs. Were looking for a technical leader to drive this team forward while upholding high standards in quality and execution all in service of our customers.

As an Engineering Manager on this team youll help lead us through a period of important growth and maturation as the advisor business continues to thrive. Youll collaborate closely with product engineering and cross-functional leadership to execute on a product roadmap with your team. Youll also get the opportunity to help plan and lead projects as well as achieve operational excellence in everything we do. Youll constantly be navigating new intricacies of our domain and collaborating tightly with other engineering leaders and stakeholders of different backgrounds all while helping mentor and grow a team of amazing engineers.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below weve reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location experience and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterments total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $170000 - $195000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday weekly.

A day in the life

  • Lead and manage 4-5 full-stack engineers on a relatively new team. We work in a full-stack ecosystem and value a quality user experience as much as proper backend fundamentals
  • Serve as an effective player-coach using direct project leadership and contributions to gain first-hand expertise into the world of financial advisors and financial portfolios
  • Build tools advisors love. Our goal is to empower financial advisors to manage their clients portfolios in a modern sleek straightforward user experience even when presenting complex subject material
  • Collaborate with product managers staff engineers and subject matter experts to make sure the team is always building the right stuff and doing so thoughtfully
  • Inspire and maintain a strong equitable engineering culture founded on transparency inclusivity mentorship and collaboration

What were looking for

  • Experience leading and contributing to full-stack web engineering projects. Our primary web application is built in Ruby on Rails but we build our newest web interfaces using a combination of React and GraphQL. Other server-side languages like Java or Python could be a good foundation
  • Experience with establishing and upholding team culture through healthy team norms processes and inclusive practices
  • Experience with hands-on managing mentoring and inspiring a talented team of full-stack engineers
  • Experience leading execution of large team projects and execution of smaller concurrent projects in partnership with senior engineers
  • Experience connecting product roadmaps and technical investments to contribute to overall business objectives
  • Experience building important high production-value software where quality and correctness matters while preserving a nimble fluid highly productive culture and workflow
  • A passion for developing your reports and helping craft opportunities for them to grow into continually more impactful team members
  • A love of software engineering and a willingness to get into the code to better understand the sophisticated business domains we work in
  • Experience collaborating with other engineering teams product managers subject matter experts and non-technical stakeholders

On average it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
