Job Description Summary:

The Director of Operations and Systems Integration will partner closely with the Leadership Team to fulfill the mission and vision of the simulation program. The position is responsible for the overall administration of educational programs in accordance with the simulation program and stakeholder institution accreditation standards. Experience with both the content and process features of all the units of the simulation program (operations team curriculum team administrative team research team) allows for an important coordinating function as well as providing a critical link of all the supportive units to product delivery.

Job Description:

The Zamierowski Institute for Experiential Learning (ZIEL) is a world class experiential learning center with a vision to transform learning collaboration and care. The mission is to co-create simulation-based learning that measurably impacts the most critical problems facing health professions education and care. ZIEL serves as a centralized resource for faculty trainees staff educators and other subject matter experts from across the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) and The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) who are interested in utilizing simulation for education performance improvement innovation and scholarship across disciplines and along the developmental continuum.

The Director of Operations and Systems Integration will join the ZIEL leadership team in strategic oversight and execution of the vision mission and strategy of ZIEL. As the leader of the ZIEL business operations unit this individual will be responsible for the strategic direction and execution of systems and processes that seamlessly integrate the four functional units of ZIEL including business operations learning and design technical operations and applied research and assessment. This includes strategic infrastructure planning for project technology and communication management while also representing ZIEL operations related to data management. This individual will manage and lead the members of the business operations unit. Finally this director will collaborate with a wide variety of technology and information management teams within KUMC and TUKHS to develop and integrate solutions within and/or using the simulated environment that advance the respective missions of KUMC and TUKHS.

The key roles and responsibilities for this position include:

ZIEL Vision Strategy and Operations. Contribute as a member of the ZIEL leadership team to:

  • Steward the vision and mission of ZIEL both internally and externally to ensure return on investment for KUMC and TUKHS.

  • Specify implement and evaluate the strategic objective(s) of ZIEL.

  • Develop and implement policies guidelines and workflows that support the vision mission and strategic objectives of ZIEL.

  • Cultivate synergies and partnerships with other leaders from KUMC and TUKHS interested in employing simulation for education quality improvement scholarship and other institutional priorities.

  • Ensure alignment and synergy across the ZIEL units and team members.

  • Create a psychologically safe learning environment for all staff and guests in ZIEL.

Business Operations. The business operations team plays a key role in cohesion and coordination across the ZIEL units and individuals. The Director of Operations and Systems Integration will be responsible for strategic direction and oversight of each of the functional areas of ZIEL business operations including:

  • Finance including multiyear forecasts successive annual operating budgets purchasing accounting consulting services and alignment with finance partners from KUMC and TUKHS.

  • Human resources including recruiting and onboarding position and salary alignment payroll benefits annual performance review and alignment with all KUMC and TUKHS policies.

  • Simulation Resource Management including the strategic and equitable allocation coordination and scheduling of the ZIEL staff simulation space equipment and administration across the diverse departments programs and constituent groups of KUMC and TUKHS.

  • Coordination and communication with ZIEL employees related to KUMC TUKHS and ZIEL policies and procedures.

  • Additional functional areas that serve across ZIEL units such as hospitality travel facilities equipment technology infrastructure and systems that support project application data and communication management.

  • Assure that business interruption plans at the unit level are robust.

Unit Leadership. Extend the vision mission strategy and culture set by the ZIEL leadership team through leadership and management of assigned ZIEL unit(s) while also ensuring impeccable alignment with other ZIEL units and team members.

  • Define the strategic direction and objectives of assigned unit(s) that advance the overall priorities of ZIEL.

  • Set direction for and oversee the recruitment interviewing and selection of personnel within assigned unit(s).

  • Develop and ensure the implementation of a system for onboarding ongoing development and performance management for members of assigned unit(s). Ensure staff have the necessary skills and tools to succeed in their assignments.

  • Develop mentor and supervise direct reports including routine one-on-one meetings goal setting feedback and coaching and performance management.

  • Maintain a personal level of subject matter expertise necessary to ensure integration of best practices and professional development of unit staff.

Systems and Technology closely with the other members of the leadership team lead strategic infrastructure design and oversight related to technology software applications project management file management and communications to advance the ZIEL vision mission and strategy.

  • Ensure integration of software applications and related processes to support data-informed process improvement and resource stewardship across ZIEL. This requires a sophisticated working knowledge of the functions and processes across the ZIEL units.

  • Partner with the data science team to design and maintain systems to collect and analyze data related to ZIEL utilization and measurable impact at the system course faculty and learner level.

  • Oversee platforms and processes that support simulation course data collection and storage including utilization and evaluation data gathered through surveys observations interviews and video recordings.

  • Build synergistic partnerships with KUMC and TUKHS technology and administrative system leaders to optimize integration enhance efficiency and ensure compliance with security and administrative guidelines.

Stakeholder Technology Innovation and Integration. Working closely with the other members of the leadership team lead the ZIEL team in leveraging simulation to support priority technology innovation and integration initiatives of KUMC and TUKHS. Examples of such initiatives include the use of simulation for artificial intelligence application space design/capital purchasing electronic health record innovations and research and development of software applications.

  • Cultivate partnerships with key technology and innovation stakeholders across KUMC and TUKHS to identify strategic uses of simulation related to technology innovation and integration.

  • In partnership with KUMC and TUKHS stakeholders develop project plans for technology and integration initiative projects that align with stakeholder objectives and the ZIEL vision and mission.

  • Serve as a critical link to translate and find synergy between diverse technology disciplines clinicians health professions educators and simulation professionals.

  • Provide leadership and project management to interdisciplinary teams comprised of a wide variety of technical experts from KUMC TUKHS ZIEL and external organizations.

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of current and future health care hardware and applications in the simulated environment such as the electronic health record and medication dispensing cabinets that enable clinicians and students to rehearse authentic workflow in simulation-based education.

Simulation Life Cycle: The mission of ZIEL to co-create experiential learning that measurably impacts patients and families is accomplished through the life cycle of each simulation project that spans from consultation to dissemination of impact. This director will contribute to the following activities:

  • Application of evidence-based principles and innovation through all phases of the simulation life cycle.

  • Strategic selection prioritization and design of simulation-based activities.

  • Ongoing enhancement of the impact and efficiency of related simulation operations such as resource management and technical operations.

  • Development and implementation a program evaluation system that supports continuous quality improvement of the services provided and the impact for KUMC and TUKHS.

  • Support simulation-enhanced continuous improvement in education care data and technical systems.

Innovations and Scholarship:

  • Contribute to emerging trends in the use of simulation in healthcare and health professions education.

  • Participate in quality improvement and innovation using simulation as a methodology.

  • Advance the science of simulation-based training and assessment through scholarly dissemination.

  • Research evaluate and recommend innovative approaches in healthcare simulation operations technologies and equipment.

  • Contribute best practices innovations and maintenance of certifications for the professional development of the simulation operations technology and education community at-large.

  • Promote the profession of healthcare simulation locally regionally and nationally.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Masters degree in a discipline related to healthcare technology or information management.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices enhances collaboration with external partners and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations

Work experience:

  • 5 years of work experience in healthcare leadership or management with a strong understanding of healthcare operations and patient care processes.

  • Experience with technical operations processes and systems to effectively integrate technology into operational workflows.

  • Experience in navigating an ever-growing library of digital tools platforms and systems.

  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting technical data identifying trends and making data-driven decisions to inform strategy and optimize operational efficiency.

  • Strong leadership personnel management and organizational experience overseeing cross-functional teams.

  • Experience with analyzing complex issues breaking them down into manageable components and proposing practical solutions.

  • Experience with maintaining confidentiality displaying diplomacy and navigating complicated organizational systems.

  • Diligent and detail-oriented. manage multiple tasks with reliable follow-through accuracy and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:

  • Experience related to the design optimization or management of health care technologies such as electronic health record platforms medication management and dispensing systems or patient-facing technologies.

  • Experience in curriculum design and education in the health professions is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in simulation-based education and process improvement is highly desirable

Certifications/License: Active licensure as a healthcare professional.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to education experience and training qualifications relative to the requirements of the position and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
