The Opportunity INDIGENOUSFAMILY COUNSELLOR
This is a 1.0 FTE positioneffective immediately to June 30 2026 or full return of the incumbent. Thefocus of the Indigenous Family Counsellor is to provide school counsellingservices to Indigenous students through a cultural lens using culturalresources and themes. The Indigenous Family Counsellor will utilize Indigenouscultural practices to create a safe and caring setting for Indigenous studentsthat are seeking school counsellor supports.
This is an itinerant districtposition with primary responsibility for schools in Kamloops and surroundingcommunities. Direct service to students and consultative service to staffparents and administrators is provided in different schools and across avariety of settings. Effective liaison with parents teachers administratorshealth care professionals and outside agencies is a critical aspect of thisposition. Travel within the district is required. This position is excluded the successfulcandidate will not be a member of the KTTA or CUPE.
Responsibilities
Providingculturally-relevant school counselling and consultative services to Indigenousstudents using Indigenous resources
Provision ofsupport for a students individual crisis such as a traumatic emotionalexperience
Coordinationplanning and facilitating Indigenous Girls or Boys Groups in elementary andsecondary schools
Consultingwith and coordinating referrals and counselling services with school districtstaff and community professionals
Maintainingstudent files in confidential cabinets in designated locations as per districtpolicy and procedure
Acting as acommunity and family liaison for in school programming
Facilitatingreferrals to outside agencies as needed
Facilitatingappropriate transportation for students to access support services
Attendinginteragency case meeting district screening meetings case conferences andschool-based meetings as requested
Providingsupport for critical events involving Indigenous students upon request fromschool district staff
Supportingschool transitions for individual Indigenous students
Providingannual written reports and intermittently as requested
Providingany other duties as requested
Qualifications
Bachelorof Social Work or a related Bachelor Degree; post Baccalaureate educationpreferred
Twoyears direct counselling experience in an Indigenous environment
Demonstratedcounselling experience with elementary and secondary school students
Knowledgeof First Nations Metis & Inuit history culture values knowledge of thehistorical and contemporary issues facing Indigenous families and communities
ValidBC Drivers License
Maintenanceof a professional membership certification or registration in an associationthat outlines professional ethics related to the provision of counsellingservices
Compensation
The salaryrange for this position is $97518-$121898 plus an excellent comprehensivebenefits package.
