About the Role
The Womens Support Worker at Yew TransitionHouse creates a welcoming and safe environment for the participants of YewTransition House (YTH). They provide emotional support safety planningadvocacy and referrals to cis women trans women non-binary individuals andchildren residents and contribute to administrative and facilityresponsibilities of the House. The House operates 24 hours 7 days per position provides coverage at times with little notice of regular8.5-hour staff shifts on the 24/7 rotation and other hours as position reports to the Yew Transition House Coordinator and requiresmembership with the BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU).
What Youll Do
- Welcomes and orientswomen and children to the house ensuring they feel safe and at ease byproviding opportunities to express and understand their feelings about violenceand family separation.
- Provides individualemotional and practical support to women of all ages as needed.
- Responds to the24-hour access phone and documents conversations per protocol.
- Accompanies residentsto appointments when appropriate and necessary.
- Assesses women seekingshelter services offers support safety planning resources and referralsand conducts intake procedures for eligible candidates.
- Assists residents indeveloping and implementing housing/accommodation plans after their departure.
- Collaborates with YTHteam members on daily administrative tasks to ensure efficient operations andservice delivery.
- Performs operationalduties to ensure smooth house operations including shopping stocking thepantry yard work donations management and basic housekeeping.
- Provides residentswith knowledge of community resources and refers them to appropriate servicescoordinating with other service providers as needed to promote safety.
- Ensures participantsfiles and related records are up-to-date accurate and secure.
- Uses teamcommunication tools consistently and effectively.
- Provides crisisintervention and manages conflict among participants through meetings andresolution when necessary.
- Ensures effectiveservice delivery consistent with agency mandates and policies meeting alllegal contractual and compliance requirements.
WhatYou Bring
- Post-secondarydegree in a related field is an asset or the equivalent in education andexperience.
- Experienceworking directly with women and children of all ages.
- Demonstratedability to be non-judgmental and provide supportive relationships withresidents without imparting personal values or preferences.
- Experienceworking with a diverse population with a demonstrated ability to communicatewith participants in a non-judgmental and empathetic manner while setting andmaintaining boundaries.
- Experienceapplying a feminist analysis of gender violence as it affects children ciswomen trans women and non-binary individuals.
- Solidunderstanding of the systemic issues that need to be addressed in order todecrease violence against women and children.
- A trauma-informedpractice approach
- Culturally competent practices and an understanding of the impacts of colonization for Indigenous communities families and individual
- Experiencesupporting people with varying levels of mental health and substance use.
- Experienceproviding crisis intervention an asset.
- Proven ability towork collaboratively across programs and with community partners.
