Summary:
This full-time instructor will be responsible for the implementation and ongoing success of a Firefighter program and for ensuring that a positive upbeat diversified interesting and active learning environment occurs in both classrooms and labs. This individual will prepare all aspects of the curriculum including course outlines syllabi rubrics exams mock-ups visual aids and instruction sheets and will effectively instruct manage and supervise individuals and groups in classrooms props and drill grounds using appropriate teaching and safety methods. They will also administer certification exams as directed.
Dixie Tech is a public technical college located on a state-of-the-art campus in St. George Utah. The College has 29 Council on Occupational Education-accredited programs that offer certifications in high-demand high-pay professions. This program currently operates in the evening but instructor schedules are subject to change.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide training and instruction in all phases of firefighting fire prevention fire protection and salvage operations.
- Demonstrate the use and care of various firefighting apparatus.
- Lead demonstrations of firefighting techniques including forcible entry use of portable fire extinguishers ladder climbing salvage operations hose layout hydrant connections use and care of hoses and protective breathing equipment rescue first-aid and methods of extinguishing fires etc.
- Promote job readiness and professionalism and assist students in seeking employment.
- Collaborate with department personnel to achieve program and accreditation standards.
- Orient new students to classroom facilities technology program expectations procedures and safety.
- Maintain effective two-way communication at all levels.
- Participate positively in department and college meetings
- Deliver engaging hands-on instruction daily using active learning methods to reinforce course concepts and develop workplace-ready skills in alignment with the program syllabus and plan.
- Develop and regularly update syllabi lesson plans lab activities and curriculum to meet current industry standards and prepare students for employment and licensure.
- Clearly define program objectives and learning competencies and effectively communicate these to students with measurable objectives for all skills taught.
- Ensure a safe clean and orderly training environment and maintain well-prepared classrooms and labs.
- Structure courses in Canvas to support student learning.
- Evaluate student performance through timely grading observations and regular reviews involving Student Services when concerns arise.
- Manage classroom behavior and enforce appropriate rules and procedures.
- Maintain and monitor student records (i.e. attendance progress competencies and graduation requirements) and keep records up to date in Northstar..
- Make student retention a priority. Monitor and support student progress toward licensure graduation and job placement.
- Meet or exceed program performance metrics as established by the VP of Instruction.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA guidelines.
- Stay current in industry trends and adjust curriculum as needed.
- Collaborate with the department director admissions and recruiters to enroll and support students likely to succeed in the field.
- Help establish admissions standards and assist in the student selection process.
- Ensure safety standards are followed in compliance with all relevant guidelines.
- Model professionalism and maintain effective communication with students colleagues and administration.
- Coordinate guest speakers and industry training sessions where applicable.
- Support train and mentor adjunct instructors as needed.
- Contribute actively to department teamwork and initiatives and communicate effectively with students instructors program directors and administration.
- Ensure compliance with COE accreditation standards including evidence documentation record keeping and participation in biannual reviews.
- Support and participate in Occupational Advisory Committee (OAC) meetings and implement committee recommendations.
- Build and maintain industry relationships to support curriculum relevance and student employment.
- Pursue professional development and stay current in instructional and technical skills.
- Manage instructional supply inventory and collaborate on budgeting with the program director.
- Work with the instructional team to align course content with program outcomes and regulatory requirements.
- Design and oversee work-based learning experiences that meet educational and accreditation standards.
- Be open to feedback and seek to continuously improve both teaching and technical skills.
- Promote a respectful learning environment free from discrimination; report concerns promptly.
- Follow all Dixie Tech policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree or Advanced Industry-Recognized Certificates required
- Bachelors degree preferred
- Teaching/training experience preferred
- 5 years experience as a paid or volunteer firefighter and/or instructor in firefighting techniques and procedures.
- Valid Fire Service Instructor Certificate Level 1 issued by UFRA IFSAC or Pro-Board.
- Knowledge of subject material and course content related to Fire Science
- Knowledge of fire terminology and hydraulics for the fire service and operating fire apparatus.
- Knowledge of standards regulations and laws pertaining to fire science including Utah Fire Service Certification System and the NFPA.
- Strong knowledge of Google Suite applications
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- The employee is occasionally required to sit stand reach lift bend kneel stoop climb push and pull items weighing 50 pounds or more. The position requires manual dexterity auditory and visual skills and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
- Certified at the level of the course taught.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- The position may occasionally involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and industry equipment hazards in a conventional educational environment.
