Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as an Environmental Health Specialist in the Division of Environmental Health. The selected candidate will perform investigations of environmental health hazards including Lead in homes and conduct inspections of regulated facilities such as pools and other recreational facilities. The individual in this position will also support other Environmental Health program activities and outbreak investigations.

  • Travels to conduct complex onsite environmental lead investigations to identify the source of lead hazards to children.
  • Participates in the investigations of complaints and potential violations of applicable laws and regulations of suspected environmental hazards public health emergencies and possible cases of environmental carried illness or disease.
  • Writes complex reports concerning environmental lead investigations suggests mitigation techniques and begins enforcement procedures concerning violations of the Lead Poisoning Prevention Act and testifies in court in support of inspection finds as required.
  • Provides training to individuals in local health departments to conduct investigations of the dwellings of lead poisoned children including the use of XRF equipment destructive testing techniques and chemical identifications of lead hazards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelors Degree from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical and/or biological sciences.
  • Requires one (1) year of professional experience in environmental health practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience conducting field inspections surveys and investigations to determine eligibility for licensure or certification and /or assess compliance with applicable state and federal laws rules and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience related to environmental sample collection and result interpretation.
  • One (1) year of experience preparing and/or reviewing evidence for court proceedings regarding environmental health regulatory programs and regulated entities.
  • One (1) year of experience conducting and directing training courses addressing environmental health activities covered by laws and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience establishing maintaining and improving cooperative working relationships with all entities on environmental health issues.
  • One (1) year of work experience using Microsoft software products including Word Excel PowerPoint etc.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires use of personal vehicle for extensive work-related travel within the State.
  • Requires possession of a current and valid Drivers license.
