Job Description

Employment Begins: 2025-26 School Year

8.0 hours/day; 5 days/week; 190 days/year

High School Athletic Trainer

STANDARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

Classification: Classified Non-Exempt Location: Multiple locations

Reports to: Director of Activities Arts & Athletics FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bargaining Unit:Non Represented (Confidential Employee)

This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties responsibilities classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description may or may not perform all of the essential functions indicated in this position description.

This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and athletic trainer and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

Part I: Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Activities Arts & Athletics this position is responsible for providing management and care of injuries sustained by high school athletes. This includes but is not limited to emergency care development of injury prevention programs assessment of injuries management of treatment protocols providing appropriate preventative measures and devices.

The District represents a diverse community with a population ofmore than 50% of students with diverse backgrounds. We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the Districts diverse populations.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

The athletic trainer works under the supervision of the Director of Activities Arts & Athletics who provides training direction and guidance governing the performance of duties. Athletic trainers are responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern their work.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment duties and responsibilities listed may include but are not limited to the following):

  1. Conducts an initial assessment of an athletes injury or illness to provide emergency or continued care and determine whether they should be referred to a physician for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Organize and manage daily operation of the athletic training room.
  3. Apply protective or injury preventive devices.
  4. Assess and report progress of recovering athletes to coaches physicians and parents.
  5. Maintain the ability to work flexible hours weekends and holidays as necessary/required. Travel with athletic teams to be available at both home and away practices and contests as scheduled by the district/site athletic directors.
  6. Evaluate status of injured athletes and make recommendations for return-to-play.
  7. Act as a liaison between health care providers the school and school district staff athletes coaches and parents.
  8. Work in cooperation with the school nurse in determining existing health conditions which may affect athletic participation and/or the general health and safety of athletes.
  9. Maintain accurate records of all injuries treatments and protocols provided.
  10. Conduct and evaluate head/injury/concussion pre-screening recovery protocol and return-to-play status.
  11. Provide coaches and site athletic director with a list of student athletes who are medically eligible to participate under district and state rules and regulations.
  12. Provide coaches and site athletic director with a list of student athletes who may require specialized medical care and/or medications coordinate with the school nurse to ensure coaches have received the appropriate training to administer medications and respond to life-threating medical conditions.

Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelors degree in athletic training with Masters degree preferred
  2. Washington State Athletic Training Licensure (or ability to become licensed prior to first day of work) Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board Certification
  3. Skills to administer appropriate levels of health care screening tests maintain records communicate effectively.
  4. Knowledge of health diagnostic and evaluate techniques athletic training/health care practices athletic training/health rules and regulations record keeping requirements and child development patterns.
  5. Abilities to sit for prolonged periods administer to medical needs respond appropriately to medical emergencies and work independently. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying reaching/handling fingering talking/hearing conversation and other sounds near/far visual acuity.
  6. Valid Drivers License and proof of insurability
  7. Ability and willingness to work outdoors occasionally during all seasons.
  8. Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities.
  9. Able to remain calm focused and in control when working with students parents guardians and community members.
  10. Able to follow written and verbal direction and take the initiative to seek clarity and take action when needed.
  11. Able to organize work and set priorities for accomplishing work in a timely and effective manner.
  12. Able to work collaboratively and effectively with staff students parents volunteers and community members.
  13. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  14. Skill in the use of office and computer equipment and use standard office software and student information system software.

Part V: Desired Qualifications:

  1. 2-3 years of professional experience as an athletic trainer
  2. Experience working with families and youth.

Part VI: Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position:


The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an athletic trainer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the athletic trainer is frequently required to sit lift carry move about hear and speak. The athletic trainer must be able to lift and/or move 25-50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The athletic trainer may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles in the fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
