3 months contract with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
This is a senior interim opportunity for an experienced Deputy Chief Accountant to lead the coordination and delivery of the annual Statement of Accounts.
The role is instrumental in ensuring the accuracy integrity and compliance of financial records while supporting strategic financial planning and decision-making.
Acting as deputy to the Chief Accountant the post holder will provide expert technical advice manage financial reporting processes and lead a team of accountants in delivering high-quality financial outputs aligned with CIPFA codes and local authority regulations.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
Lead the production and coordination of the Council s annual Statement of Accounts and supporting working papers.
Oversee compliance with CIPFA codes IFRS standards and local government financial regulations.
Manage and maintain the chart of accounts ensuring accurate and timely statutory and management reporting.
Provide expert technical guidance on complex accounting matters VAT and new accounting standards (e.g. IFRS 16).
Act as the technical lead in liaising with external auditors responding to audit queries and progressing recommendations.
Supervise balance sheet reconciliations asset valuations and other critical financial control processes.
Prepare cash flow statements and assist in long-term financial planning and strategy development.
Lead and develop a team of principal accountants ensuring effective task delegation quality assurance and staff performance.
Contribute to ongoing process improvements and system integrity of financial platforms such as SAP or similar.
Represent the Finance function on internal and external boards or working groups as required.
Skills/Experience:
Proven experience in local government financial accounting and statutory reporting.
Strong technical understanding of UK GAAP IFRS CIPFA codes and public sector accounting standards.
Experience leading year-end closure and producing complex financial statements including HRA and Collection Fund.
Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
High attention to detail and a strong commitment to compliance and integrity.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to advise and influence senior stakeholders.
Experience with financial systems such as SAP and advanced Excel skills.
Knowledge of asset valuation methodologies and maintaining asset registers.
Experience of managing external audits and supporting inspection processes.
Understanding of complex VAT matters and broader taxation in local authorities.
Strong track record of system/process improvement initiatives.

Full-time role; 36 Hours/week.
Fully qualified accountant (CIPFA ACCA ACA or equivalent).
Location: Civic Centre / Hybrid Working.
