ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of routine maintenance and repair duties in the maintenance of school buildings facilities and equipment; troubleshoot malfunctions of related parts and equipment.
Assist tradespersons with a variety of assigned special projects related to carpentry plumbing painting HVAC and electrical work; assist with preventive maintenance.
Maintain and repair furniture and cabinets; perform minor repairs on doors frames locks and hinges; replace tiles.
Assist with installing repairing and replacing fans compressors pumps heaters and motors; adjust ventilation systems.
Clear plugged drains and sewer lines; repair or replace sinks toilets dispensers and drinking fountains.
Repair or replace circuits fuses fixtures switches and fittings.
Operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment including drills fitters gauges pumps detectors locators welders compressors and a variety of hand and power tools; operate a vehicle to conduct work.
Prepare walls ceilings fences and other surfaces for painting; repair holes scrapes and other minor surface damage.
Communicate with District personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to work orders supplies equipment and assigned activities.
Prepare and maintain records related to work orders materials and assigned activities.
Work from verbal and written instructions blueprints sketches and work orders.
Order materials and supplies as directed.

Methods equipment and materials used in general maintenance work.
Requirements of maintaining buildings and facilities in good repair.
Applicable building codes ordinances fire regulations and safety precautions.
Health and safety regulations and procedures.
Basic math and the ability to convert amounts.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
Oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
Perform a variety of routine maintenance and repair duties in the maintenance of school buildings facilities and equipment.
Assist tradespersons with a variety of special projects as assigned.
Observe health and safety regulations and procedures.
Operate tools and equipment used in general maintenance work.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Maintain routine records related to work performed.
Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff students administrators parents and others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year general maintenance experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Class C drivers license and a safe driving record.

Indoor and outdoor work environment.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work and to attend off-site trainings and workshops as needed.
Regular exposure to fumes dust and odors.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools.

Seeing to read a variety of materials and inspect District facilities.
Standing for extended periods of time.
Lifting and carrying heavy objects as assigned by position.

Bending at the waist kneeling or crouching.

Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
Working at heights.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Positions in the job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year.
The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Hayward Unified School District will provide a contribution of up to $2500 per year to be used towards a District healthcare plan or cash in lieu of up to $1350 per year. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week or more. Family coverage is available and any additional premium will be employee paid. Classified employees must participate in the CalPERS Retirement program. All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP). The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance short term disability and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.
