Purpose of the Position
This is a full-time engineering management position at Thorlabs-UFO (Ann Arbor MI) a division of Thorlabs Inc. This position is responsible for leading and supervising a team of engineers as they initiate develop test modify and release new high-speed optoelectronic products to production. These products include hermetically packaged microwave-frequency photonic components including detectors receivers and modulators. This person should also have the engineering experience & skills to function as an engineer in charge of individual new products.
Essential Job Functions include the following but are not limited to:
Responsible for leading a team of cross-disciplinary development engineers
Work with the GM to identify and implement new products
Identify staffing needs to fulfill development plans; develop staffing plans make hiring and termination recommendations
Create budgets and schedules for new product developments
Identify and make recommendations for new R&D & production equipment
Manage project risks including the development of contingency plans
Interact with and contribute to Thorlabs global engineering organization
Hold regular meetings for coordination of engineering staff
Prototype develop test & qualify new products for manufacturing
Coordinates NPI efforts with engineering purchasing and production staff
Interact with customers for new ideas and technical support
Write support documentation manuals application notes
Write and negotiate product specifications compliance requirements
Report progress with periodic summary presentations
Experience:
10 years of photonic or optoelectronic component product development (laboratory) experience (Photodetectors Modulators Receivers Lasers fiber-optics etc.)
3 years experience managing cross-functional teams and projects including optical mechanical electronic and semiconductor elements.
Experience packaging optoelectronics components including hermetic microassembly precision optical alignment and RF packaging.
Education:
BS or MS in Optics Physics EE or related field
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of optoelectronic component design and fabrication including photodetectors and modulators
Knowledge of high frequency time & frequency domain >40GHz design and testing
Experience with fiber-optic telecommunications hardware
Strong problem solving and design of experiment (DOE) skills
Candidate must be detail oriented highly organized & able to document work
Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills
The estimated pay range for this role is $119450 - $186555 annually
