Harris County Precinct 4 is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Naturalist to join our Parks Department team. This role is ideal for someone who brings Heart to community service Hustle to daily operations and strives for Higher Standards in environmental education and public engagement.
As a Naturalist you will collaborate with staff volunteers and partner organizations to design and deliver engaging outdoor programs that foster appreciation for the natural resources in our parks and trails. Youll serve as a key ambassador for nature interpretation environmental stewardship and outdoor recreation.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead a variety of outdoor recreation and environmental education programs that reflect the values of Heart (community connection) Hustle (initiative and energy) and Higher Standards (quality and professionalism).
- Create structured program outlines focused on local ecosystems flora fauna and watersheds using engaging and inclusive teaching methods.
- Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations volunteers and community groups.
- Maintain and clean animal ambassador enclosures with care and attention to animal welfare.
- Respond to public inquiries and provide accurate friendly information about programs and facilities.
- Collect and analyze program data; maintain records of attendance feedback and outcomes.
- Assist in developing annual budgets and managing program supplies and equipment.
- Coordinate logistics for programs including staff schedules transportation and materials.
- Create promotional materials and contribute to park publications and media outreach.
- Enforce park rules and ensure visitor safety with professionalism and respect.
- Support special events and festivals across Precinct 4 parks throughout the year.
- Perform routine maintenance on program equipment and assist with special projects.
- Maintain relevant certifications (e.g. NAI CPR/AED boaters education).
- Write educational articles and content for public distribution.
- Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Demonstrate leadership and teamwork in all interactions with staff volunteers and the public.

Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in Parks and Recreation Biology Environmental Science or nature-related curriculum from an accredited college or university
OR:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution
- Three (3) years of experience in a similar position or field of work
Licensure:
Valid Texas drivers license with a good driving record.
Additional Requirements:

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to engage diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook Word Excel Access PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of local flora fauna ecosystems and Texas natural history.
- Ability to write clear engaging reports and educational content.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Demonstrates integrity adaptability and a strong work ethic aligned with Precinct 4s values.

Preferences
Preferred Experience/Familiarity:
- Experience working with children and the public in educational or recreational settings.
- Experience in outdoor recreation activities (e.g. hiking fishing camping).
- Experience operating motorboats canoes or kayaks is beneficial.
- Ability to drive a 15-passenger van; trailering experience.
- Familiarity with GPS units geocaching and outdoor navigation tools.
- Public speaking and nature interpretation experience.
Preferred Licensure/Certification:
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- National Association for Interpretation (NAI)
Preferred Language:
Bilingual
General Information
Position Type Salary and Typical Hours of Work:
Regular Full-time 40 hours per week
Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings weekends and during emergencies or special events.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Regularly required to stand walk climb kneel crouch and use hands for various tasks.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds regularly 50 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Requires visual acuity for close and distance vision color differentiation depth perception and focus adjustment.
- Frequent work in outdoor environments including exposure to extreme weather humidity and uneven terrain.
- Occasional exposure to mechanical equipment fumes and nighttime conditions.
- Shared workspace with staff animals and reptiles.
- Moderate noise levels; routine use of computers and office equipment.
