A full overview of TUH is available on of the role: The Therapy Assistant will assist in the delivery of quality patient care and associated duties to Critical care patients of TUH under the direction and supervision of the Speech and Language Therapists Occupational Therapists and Dietitians.
Overview of role: Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the qualified therapists in delivering an excellent Speech and Language Therapy Occupational Therapy and Nutrition and Dietetic services to critical care patients of TUH as part of the acute hospital service.
Contribute to the assessment and treatment of patients undertaking therapeutic work and supervising patients in activity relating to their treatment.
Undertake general departmental duties such as preparation of materials for therapy sessions collation of statistical information and ordering equipment.
Undertake clerical duties and household tasks to support the clinical service delivery in the relevant areas.
Report to the Speech and Language Therapist/Occupational Therapist/Dietitian to whom they are assigned.
Ultimately accountable to the Head of Discipline (i.e. Speech & Language Therapy Manager).
Clinical duties
Assist the Therapist(s) in the assessment of clients and the implementation of treatment interventions as directed by the Therapist(s).
Prepare the patient and the environment for assessment and/or treatment as directed by the Therapist(s).
Carry out interventions under the direction of the Therapist(s).
Organise and supervise therapeutic activities with individual patients as directed by the Therapist(s).
Use equipment during therapeutic interventions as directed by the therapist(s).
Progress patient treatment as directed by the Therapist(s) within established protocols and guidelines.
Observe general behaviour ability and response of the patient to a therapeutic intervention and report the observations to the Therapist(s).
Use knowledge and understanding of patients needs to involve and motivate the patient in the therapeutic process.
General duties
Use knowledge of the role of the Speech and Language Therapy/Occupational Therapy/Dietitian Assistant and understand the responsibilities and accountability of that role within the team.
Recognise the importance of a good working relationship with frequent communication between the Assistant and the supervising Therapist(s)
Communicate effectively and appropriately with a range of patients healthcare professionals external services as required.

Maintain order cleanliness and tidiness of treatment areas and equipment in accordance with local departmental guidelines.
Clean and maintain therapy equipment and logs of same on a regular basis as directed
Carry out departmental stock control ordering and receiving supplies monitoring equipment and reporting faulty equipment as outlined by local departmental policies and procedures.
Carry out administrative duties associated with the clinical area and duties of the role
Perform such other duties appropriate to the role as may be assigned by the Speech & Language Therapy Manager.

Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication during delivery of treatment programmes to patients who may have barriers to understanding or communicating in order to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensure understanding of the condition.
Use skills of listening facilitating persuasion motivation reassurance negotiation and explanation regularly to overcome difficulties encountered which may include loss of hearing visual impairment expressive and receptive communication impairment altered perception cognitive problems diminished mental capacity pain fear language barriers and cultural differences.
Under the guidance of qualified staff communicate information to patients and carers about provision of services and equipment.
Accurately record appropriate documentation and service data.
Communicate with patients relatives carers equipment services social and health care professionals and other voluntary organisations and statutory bodies to assist the Therapists in ensuring an integrated holistic approach to patient care.
General accountability:
Commitment to continuous professional development including development of a personal development plan completion of mandatory training and relevant internal training programmes available through our Centre for Learning & Development.
Maintain throughout the Hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities.

Health & Safety:
Observe all rules relating to Health and Safety and Conduct at Work and use any equipment provided in a safe and responsible manner.
Report any incident or potential incident which may compromise the health and safety of others and take appropriate action. Report any accidents near misses to the person in charge and ensure completion of incident / near miss forms.
Do not undertake any duty related to patient / service user care for which he/she is not trained.
Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example Standards for Healthcare National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections Hygiene Standards etc. and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards as appropriate to the role.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Must :
Have obtained at least Grade D3 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher ordinary applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent
Or
Have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher i.e. Fetac Level 5
Or
Have satisfactory relevant experience which encompasses demonstrable equivalent skills
And
Show evidence of recent knowledge and patient facing experience in an acute hospital/rehabilitation environment.
Show evidence of practical experience and use of IT systems / packages
Have fluent command and understanding of the English language to include spoken and written word
Desirable:
It is desirable to have a health or social care qualification (e.g. QQI Level 5 award for Speech and Language therapy/Occupational Therapy/Dietetic Assistant or other equivalent Health care support worker course).
Minimum of 1 years recent experience in an acute hospital environment
Experience working with one or more of the 3 disciplines Speech & Language Therapy Occupational Therapy or Dietetics and/or in the critical care setting.
Experience working with electronic patient record systems.
Reward & Recognition
Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales grade code 6504.
The appointment is fulltime permanent and pensionable. A panel will be formed for future permanent and temporary full-time and part-time opportunities.
The annual leave entitlement is 23 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
Normal (full time) working hours are 39 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION Age Restrictions In Relation To Applications Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2004). Point on Salary Scale New appointees to any grade start at the minimum point of the scale. Incremental credit will be applied for recognised relevant service in Ireland and abroad (Department of Health Circular 2/2011). Incremental credit is normally granted on appointment in respect of previous experience in the Civil Service local authorities health service and other public service bodies and statutory agencies.
Probation The probationaryperiod may be extended at the Hospitals discretion but will not in any case exceed 9 months. Confirmation of your appointment as a permanent member of staff is subject to the successful completion of the probation period. Termination of this agreement within the probationary period shall be at the discretion of the Hospital in accordance with the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act 1973 - 2001.
Termination of Employment The employment may be terminated at any time by one months notice on either side except where circumstances are dictated by the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act 1973/91. The Managements right under this paragraph shall not be exercised save in circumstances where the Management is of the opinion that the holder of the office has failed to perform satisfactorily the duties of the post or has misconducted himself/herself in relation to the post or is otherwise unfit to hold the appointment.
Sick Leave
There is provision for sick pay at the Hospitals discretion subject to the regulations and details found in the Staff Handbook/ Personnel Policy Manual as per the Hospitals sick leave policy.
In the event of absence from work you are required to contact your Manager/Supervisor within one hour of starting time on the first day of absence while a Medical Certificate is required for any illness lasting in excess of two days. Failure to comply with the sick leave policy may result in a loss of pay for the period of absence and may also incur disciplinary action.

Pension Arrangements and Retirement age There are three superannuation schemes currently in operation for staff in Tallaght University Hospital: (a) Voluntary Hospital Superannuation Scheme (Non-New Entrant) (b) Voluntary Hospital Superannuation Scheme (New Entrant) (c) Single Public Service Pension Scheme

Mandated and Designated Persons under Children First Act 2015 Schedule 2 of the Children First Act 2015 specifies the classes of persons defined as Mandated Persons for the purposes of the Act.
