The Volunteer Coordinator is a position that manages Shelburne Farms volunteer program including recruiting training scheduling and supporting volunteers who contribute meaningfully to visitor experiences education and stewardship programs. This person works closely with the visitor services team enhancing the volunteer tour guide experience and other managers across the farm.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment & Outreach
Develop and implement inclusive recruitment strategies that reflect Shelburne Farms mission and the diversity of our broader community.
Represent Shelburne Farms at community events and partner with local educational organizations and networks.
Volunteer Onboarding & Management
Oversee the full volunteer lifecycle including intake orientation placement training scheduling evaluation and recognition.
Develops and reviews volunteer job descriptions procedures and training materials.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with volunteers and supervisors.
Match volunteers with appropriate opportunities across departments (education events trails etc.).
Acknowledges thanks and supports volunteers.
Program Coordination & Development
Maintain an up-to-date database of volunteer roles and schedules.
Maintain and update volunteer contact information for the database.
Collaborate with staff to develop meaningful safe and mission-aligned volunteer experiences.
Organize recognition events and create systems of ongoing appreciation and feedback.
Administrative & Reporting Duties
Track volunteer hours and participation metrics.
Evaluate program impact and inform improvements.
Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures including risk management and safety protocols.
Support special visits tours and other tasks as needed
Passion for Shelburne Farms mission and values.
Experience coordinating volunteers or community engagement in a nonprofit education hospitality or land-based setting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to foster relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and identities.
Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
Proficient with digital tools such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for special events programs and training sessions.
Experience in education sustainability and interpretation
Familiarity with inclusive volunteer practices.
Experience with databases and reporting tools.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of settings including office spaces historic buildings farm landscapes and outdoor environments.
Physical requirements include navigating uneven terrain ascending and descending stairs and participating in outdoor activities.
Operating the tour vehicle (truck)
A motor vehicle background check is required for this position
