Definition of Classification:
The Theatre Scene Shop Coordinator is responsible for the execution of all scenic prop lighting and sound design elements for the Theatre Arts Department productions. Working closely with the Technical Director the Theatre Scene Shop Coordinator supervises student workers in all phases of construction and load in and out.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Plans and executes the scenic construction for all department productions as designed by faculty guest artists or students in collaboration with design faculty and Technical Director.
Supervises and trains student crews as assigned including advice on the safe operation and use of tools and equipment.
Maintains facility and equipment.
Operates a variety of specialized theatre production equipment and machines including lighting sound and rigging equipment; operates computer lighting control system.
Maintains and operates stationery wood working tools mig and tig welders hand tools and metal working tools.
Understands and comprehends fire safety and health regulations.
Uses and supervises students in safe operation of theatrical counter-weight system and other rigging operations.
Coordinates the technical support of all events scheduled in collaboration with department faculty and staff.
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.
Qualification Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to but not limited to the following:
Experience/Training/Education:
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of at least two (2) years of additional coursework in related fields such as welding blueprint reading or computer lighting control systems.
Preferred Education
Associates degree or higher in theatre technology technical theatre stage production or a closely related field.
Additional training or certifications in areas such as rigging lighting design sound engineering or stage safety.
Knowledge and Skills:
Technical theatre operations including methods equipment and materials.
Lighting sound and scenic production requirements.
Operation and maintenance of specialized theatre production equipment.
Safety regulations compliance standards and safe working practices.
Training and providing work direction to others.
Working independently and managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Fostering a cooperative and collaborative workshop environment.
Communicating and interacting effectively with a culturally and ethnically diverse community of students faculty and staff.
Ability to successfully complete a post-offer physical examination demonstrating the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position.
Valid drivers license and ability to provide a current DMV printout.
Willingness and availability to work evenings and/or weekends as required.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Working Conditions:
This position is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments including theatres workshops and stage areas and may involve exposure to varying noise levels lighting conditions and theatrical effects such as fog strobes and amplified sound. The role requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends in support of rehearsals performances and special events. Work involves regular use of specialized theatre equipment power tools and stage materials all of which must be handled in compliance with established safety procedures. The position may also require occasional travel between campus locations or to off-site venues for productions or related activities.
Physical Demands:
The role requires the physical ability to perform the essential functions of technical theatre work including standing walking bending stooping and reaching on a regular basis. The position involves lifting carrying pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds climbing ladders and working at heights on lifts or other stage equipment. Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary to operate and maintain lighting sound and other technical systems with precision. The role may also require working in confined spaces and elevated areas as production needs demand. A post-offer physical examination will be required to confirm the candidates ability to meet these physical requirements.

HIRING RANGE:Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification commensurate with candidates education experience skills and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as theHiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK:Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. DRIVERS LICENSE CHECK:Possession of a valid Drivers License is required for certain positions. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS:For certain positions typically in Public Safety Facilities Athletics and Information Technology Services departments employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 Safety Officers in addition to a pre-employment physical exam will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
