The Santa Barbara County District Attorneys Office has a vacancy for a Paralegal. This position is assigned to the Consumer/Environmental Protection Unit. This position will be based in Santa Barbara.

We are also accepting applications to establish one employment list to fill current and future vacancies in Santa Barbara Santa Maria and Lompoc.Please be sure to select all of the locations you are willing to accept employment for current and future vacancies. Work locations are assigned by the District Attorney and subject to change based on workload demands.

About the Department: The mission of the Santa Barbara County District Attorneys Office is to pursue truth and justice by employing the highest ethical standards in vigorously prosecuting the guilty protecting the innocent and preventing crime.

The District Attorney has offices in Santa Barbara Santa Maria and Lompoc. The Office embodies a team approach to fighting crime wherein Deputy District Attorneys Investigators Victim Witness staff and support staff work closely together at all stages of a case. The Office is also dedicated to ongoing training and skill development as well as fostering the development of new technologies to fight crime and achieve justice. Specialized prosecution units exist for areas of great concern to the County including violent crimes gangs vulnerable victims and white-collar crime.

THE POSITION: Under general supervision assists attorneys in the research analysis and interpretation of civil criminal or land-use legal issues and cases; performs other related duties as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:The ideal candidate will be a certificated paralegal with experience in civil litigation who can assist attorneys with research analysis document preparation and case management for civil and criminal enforcement cases.


Examples of Duties

  1. Draft pleadings petitions orders to show cause and discovery documents (interrogatories requests for admission requests for production of documents deposition subpoenas);
  2. Cite-check legal memoranda and motions;
  3. File and serve court documents;
  4. Coordinate civil discovery including service of discovery demands and drafting responses to discovery demands propounded on the People;
  5. Research and analyze law sources for use in preparing legal documents including motions and memoranda of points and authorities;
  6. Coordinate and assist with witness interviews for pre-trial or pre-hearing declarations;
  7. Coordinate and schedule depositions and court reporters;
  8. Review legal documents and forms for completeness and conformance to specific requirements set forth in applicable legal codes and court rules;
  9. Perform preliminary analysis of legislative bills and research legislative histories;
  10. Manage deadlines and calendaring in filed civil cases;
  11. Summarize organize and index prior opinions testimony depositions and documentary material from interrogatories; organize and index trial documents; prepare exhibits and assist attorneys at trial by keeping track of exhibits testimony and documents;
  12. Schedule witness appearances for legal proceedings;
  13. Assemble organize and produce legal and other documents for use by attorneys; prepares exhibits; and assists attorneys at trial.

Employment Standards

  1. Possession of a valid Paralegal Certificate; OR
  2. Successful completion of a paralegal curriculum approved by the California or American Bar Association; OR
  3. Successful completion of the first year of law school training in an accredited law school AND six months of experience as a paralegal; OR
  4. One year of experience as a paralegal; OR
  5. A combination of training education and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge of: legal and court procedure terminology and documents; methods of legal research.

Ability to: research analyze and apply legal principles facts evidence and precedents to legal problems; understand and communicate clearly and accurately in written and oral form statements of law and fact; conduct investigative research; assess and organize documents based on relevant legal issues; develop and maintain effective relationships with staff members departmental representatives and the public; learn to input access and analyze data using a computer; work under pressure of meeting deadlines.

Supplemental Information

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:

  1. Review applications and supplemental questionnaires to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
  2. Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.

Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking assessment to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s) rank on the employment list and exact duration of the employment list.

To be eligible for this credit you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or (2) discharge from a military or veterans hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability.

To receive veterans preference points you must: (1) check the Veterans Preference Points box on the employment application form (2) submit a copy of your Form DD214 to the Human Resources Department on or before the application deadline and (3) pass all phases of the Application & Selection process. The preference points will be added to your final test score.

Conditional Job Offer:Once a conditional offer of employment has been made the candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check which includes a conviction history check and satisfactory reference checks. Appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of one year.
