Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reports to directly to the Chief of Pharmacy.
  • Plans schedules and monitors staffing activities including hiring orienting evaluating disciplinary actions and continuing education initiatives.
  • Provides assistance to assure compliance with all requirements for pharmacy operations as required by Indian Health Services (IHS) Federal and State laws.
  • Oversees the supervision of pharmacy personnel when the Chief of Pharmacy is on leave or out of the office. Approves leave as needed.
  • Establishes policies procedures and processes for pharmacy services and ensures compliancy with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensures all policies are reviewed and updated annually.
  • Ensures the establishment of competencies and evaluating the competency and performance of pharmacy personnel.
  • Oversees the pharmacy personnel (inpatient and outpatient) which includes work allocation schedules time approval hiring training orientation and problem resolution.
  • Direct supervisor to all pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants. Create and adjust daily pharmacy technician and pharmacy assistant schedules.
  • Evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions and motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Evaluates medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations.
  • Performs administrative consultative or staff advisory work for a medical facilitys pharmacy program.
  • Oversees the procurement storage and dispensation of medications and supplies ensuring compliance with federal state and local regulations.
  • Ensures the pharmacy department is meeting the standards of the Center of Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).
  • Monitors the clinical performance of individuals with clinical privileges drug utilization evaluation medical records reviews performance of external services patient satisfaction and patient complaints and developing plans of resolution where needed.
  • Keeps pharmacy personnel informed of procedures policies and directives to ensure the pharmacy team is kept current.
  • Manages the pharmacy budget including forecasting monitoring expenses and identifying opportunities for cost savings.
  • Develops modifies and maintains the drug formulary as agreed upon by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Provides direction and advice to health professionals on prescriptions and all pharmacy related activities.
  • Participation in administrative management quality assurance and other requirement activities meetings or committees as necessary or assigned.
  • Reviews medications ordered by clinic providers patient medication profiles and patient Electronic Health Records to determine appropriateness safety and completeness of medication order possible drug interactions potential for adverse reaction and any other special aspects or considerations in dispensing medications.
  • Reviews appropriateness of medication therapy regimen. Advise providers of alternative or preferred medications for cost-effectiveness and/or disease state management standards.
  • Inspects processed medications for integrity of dosage form; correct labeling handling and storage instructions; and proper medication and quantity as labeled of each prescription before dispensing. Reports and document medication errors and/or intervention.
  • Attends in-service training presented to staff by residents students and others. Obtains continuing education (CE) credits as required by state of license and to maintain clinical competency. Assists with the training of new staff and may act as preceptor when assigned a student
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities within the Fort Defiance Indian Hospital anticoagulation clinic policy and procedure manual when assigned to the anticoagulation clinic.
  • Collaborates with the Chief of Pharmacy in the performance evaluation of team members including work accomplishments problems progress in mastering tasks and work processes and individual and team training needs.
  • Resolves complaints from patients and employees when needed. Keeps Chief of Pharmacy informed of complaints resolved.
  • Assists Outpatient and Inpatient supervisors carry out their assigned duties when needed.
  • Assists the Chief of Pharmacy for adjustment and approval of timecards by the deadline for all staff members every pay period when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in pharmacy within a hospital and three (3) years in management capacity.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education:

  • Completion of an accredited college or university with a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy or Pharm. D.
  • Must maintain an active unrestricted Pharmacy License in any U.S. State or Territory by completing necessary Board of Pharmacy requirements for the respective state of licensing.
