About the organisation

He Waka Tapu is a Kaupapa Mori organisation who have been supporting individuals and the community for 30 years. He Waka Tapu works to increase the health and wellbeing of Whnau.

He Waka Tapu services work within a tikanga Mori integrated model of care which offers a wide range of holistic health education/and promotion advisory liaison and co-ordination supports that are effectively targeted to Mori ensuring Mori are assisted to better utilise community health services. We are concerned for the ongoing wellbeing of whanau and our energy is focussed on an authentic engagement model that isnt time-focussed.

The Christchurch City Mission and He Waka Tapu together provide the Canterbury based roles of Withdrawal Management nurses who are part of the wider network of the Southern Region Hub and Spoke Withdrawal Management model of care.

About the role

The Withdrawal Management Nurse will provide quality and culturally appropriate withdrawal management services to tangata whaiora who are alcohol and/or other drug (AOD) dependent. They will provide a flexible accessible withdrawal management service in conjunction with the persons GP whnau support people and other health professionals. They will operate as part of the local AOD system and wider regional network to increase withdrawal management capability across a variety of settings including GP residential services and other health services.

Skills and experience

  • Comprehensive or psychiatric nursing registration with a current practising certificate
  • Competence and experience in mental health alcohol and drug and in particular detoxification management
  • Proven ability to network and communicate with tangata whaiora colleagues and external agencies
  • Excellent planning time management organisation and coordination skills
  • Experience or knowledge of Kaupapa and tikanga Mori or a willingness to learn and participate
  • Ability to cope with a high and varied workload including emergency and other complex situations
  • Confidence to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • A commitment to quality and accuracy and be keen to learn and develop new skills and contribute to service development across the sector
  • Computer literacy and ability to use a clinical database
  • A current full clean drivers licence
