The Lead Sterile Processing Technician plays a critical role in ensuring that all surgical instruments equipment and supplies are properly cleaned sterilized maintained and readily available for patient addition to performing all core sterile processing duties the Lead Technician provides team leadership training and oversight to support operational excellence regulatory compliance and interdepartmental collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
Training & Onboarding: Serve as the primary trainer for sterile processing staff supporting onboarding ongoing education and competency validation.
Scheduling & Coverage: Assist leadership in coordinating staffing needs daily work assignments and coverage to ensure continuous department support.
Process Oversight: Monitor adherence to established policies and procedures provide feedback and recommend improvements for efficiency and quality.
Compliance & Auditing: Conduct routine quality assurance checks and maintain compliance with CMS AAMI TJC and other regulatory requirements.
Inventory & Equipment Oversight: Monitor instrumentation supplies and equipment; assist in troubleshooting ordering and ensuring preventive maintenance is completed.
Interdepartmental Liaison: Serve as the primary contact for OR leadership and clinical teams regarding sterile processing needs and issues.
Policy Development: Collaborate with leadership to update and maintain SPD policies procedures and staff competencies.
Core SPD Functions: Collect decontaminate sterilize and assemble surgical instruments; prepare instrument trays; monitor sterilization equipment; maintain accurate records; and ensure readiness of all supplies for surgical procedures.
Qualifications:
Certification in sterile processing (CBSPD or HSPA/IAHCSMM).
Minimum 2 years of sterile processing experience preferably in an ASC or hospital setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of sterilization techniques infection control standards and surgical instrumentation.
Strong leadership communication and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to train mentor and support staff development.
High attention to detail organizational skills and commitment to patient safety.
High School diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training preferred.
