Job Description

Non-Exempt; 8 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year Grade KK

DEFINITION

Performs a variety of skilled carpentry and locksmith tasks and serves as carpentry and/or locksmith crew leader; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the general supervision of a shop supervisor. Incumbents monitor instruct or oversee the work of trades helpers and journey level classifications in the carpentry trades series; serves as working leader of a crew of carpenters engaged in performing a variety of skilled carpentry and locksmith tasks; may provide written or oral information to a superior regarding the performance of subordinates assigned to a crew shop or team but is not assigned formal responsibility for performance evaluation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the lead journeyman level of the carpenter trades series overseeing the work of a crew of subordinate trades personnel and performing highly skilled carpentry and locksmith tasks. Many maintenance tasks are performed at schools centers and offices while others are performed in a shop or fixed site. Work is usually carried out within the framework of well defined procedures but some independent judgement is exercised to complete assigned tasks. Work is checked through personal inspection by a superior or approval of an administrator at the work site. Some positions assigned to this classification may be required to work an evening shift on a regular or rotating basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed.)

Oversees and participates in the work of a small group of employees engaged in performing a variety of skilled carpentry duties on the interior and exterior of buildings including building repairing and installing a wide variety of structural woodwork cabinetry flooring and other related structural components in accordance with building codes.

Receives work orders sketches plan procures materials and oversees completion of work.

Builds and installs cabinetry and classroom accessories including bookcases and coat racks; repairs and/or replaces floor tiles carpets wooden floors ceiling tiles and metal grids window shades Venetian blinds desks chairs and other similar items.

Repairs or replaces damaged metal window panes cleans frames and surfaces selects appropriate glass cuts glass to size and uses putty or other appropriate glazing compound to mount and fix glass in place as required.

Performs light forming and concrete work.

Replaces hardware such as hinges handles and locks; repairs or replaces internal and external doors and door frames; builds forms partitions decks and walls.

Operates and maintains hand and power tools including drills and planers table band panel and radial arm saws routers orbital and belt sanders metal cutters and post hole diggers.

Uses ladders scaffolding bobcat stake bed dump and bucket trucks; protects surrounding areas or objects by covering.

Assists Shop Supervisor in oversight and supervisory tasks as assigned.

Orders and procures materials from vendors and supply houses.

Ensures proper maintenance of tools and other carpentry equipment and safety of the work area.

Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials.

Orders and procures parts and materials from vendors and supply houses; performs operator maintenance on vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.

Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the equipment materials methods practices and tools used in the carpentry locksmith trade and welding (sheetmetal) trades.

Thorough knowledge of building construction and maintenance codes related to carpentry work and federal regulations related to handicapped access.

Thorough knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions.

Skill in the use of tools equipment and materials pertinent to the trade.

Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the full journey level; ability to observe monitor train assign lead and make recommendations to superior regarding the work of subordinates assigned to a crew.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions diagrams blueprints and sketches.

Ability to estimate time and materials needed for small jobs and to perform routine record keeping tasks and arithmetic computations.

Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.

MINIMUM EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Completion of high school including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship carpentry training and extensive progressively more responsible experience in the carpentry trade at the journey level or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge skill and ability.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Certificate of Asbestos Training.

Possession of an appropriate valid automotive vehicle operators license.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all essential tasks including lifting up to 80 pounds stooping bending kneeling and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; wearing a dust mask; working from ladders scaffolds and bucket trucks up to 40 feet high.

HAZARDS

Exposure to broken glass fumes dust extreme temperatures and asbestos; using power equipment; working from heights; excessive noise levels.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Work is performed both inside and outside school buildings often from high places or in cramped spaces and may require working during unusual hours.
