Job Description Summary

The Greenhouse Horticulturist will work closely with the Director Gardens Manager and Reynolda staff members to coordinate plant production for Reynolda Gardens permanent collections indoor and outdoor plantings seasonal in-between displays and plant sales. The Greenhouse Horticulturist will be responsible for researching and providing care for all plant material grown in the production facility and residing in the Brown Family Conservatory including light temperature irrigation fertilizer and pesticide application. The Greenhouse Horticulturist will develop crop schedules maintain records and manage an IPM program for production areas and addition the Greenhouse Horticulturist will be responsible for the upkeep and stocking of the Reynolda Welcome Center sales area. Designs and maintains certain beds and stock areas.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Cares for the permanent tropical collection which includes orchids succulents bromeliads ferns and others.

  • Propagates plants for year-round plant sales as well as plants needed for seasonal plantings. Orders plants from suppliers as needed.

  • Assists in planning planting and maintenance of assigned areas in the 4 acres of the Formal Gardens and assists in care of the 103 acres of the Greater Gardens as directed.

  • Implements a comprehensive integrated pest management program for the greenhouses.

  • Coordinates with Reynolda Manager of Tours and Volunteers and trains schedules and manages volunteers.

  • Assists with the education program. Presents classes gives tours and writes articles for Reynolda Gardens publications.

  • Works with the Coordinator of Early Childhood Education to assure that the collections meet the needs of the education program and plant needs are met for school groups.

Required Education Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Associates degree in Horticulture plus 3 years related experience (greenhouse and propagation) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • An active NC pesticide applicators license required or the ability to obtain one within one calendar year.

  • Valid driver license with good driving record; must be insurable.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of plant propagation and of tropical plants. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace and other related computer programs and software.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks using effective organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to research and write horticultural related articles for publication.

  • Ability to conduct tours and give classes and workshops on various horticultural topics.

  • Ability to work with and organize volunteers.

  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor to work with a variety of constituents and colleagues.

  • Ability to follow all University policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends on a rotating schedule special events and holidays.

Accountabilities:

  • Recruits trains and schedules volunteers. Reports to the Manager of Reynolda Gardens.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to pick up or lift 40 lbs.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Subject to both environmental conditions activities occur inside and outside.
