Job Description


The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is the largest school board in Eastern Ontario and offers students and parents a world of choice for learning. We are seeking creative dynamic committed educational leaders

to join the following initiative:

Educational Assistant

100% Regular (10 month work year)

$29.54 to $36.70 per hour

Ideal candidates will support the fulfillment of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Boards (OCDSB) Strategic Plan to enhance the quality of education in the school and the District by creating a positive and inclusive school climate learning and workplace environment. Candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a human rights and equity perspective to foster student success achievement and well-being.


Qualifications

Under the direction of the Principal the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the school team and is responsible for the provision of support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position involves dealing with confidential information and requires ongoing flexibility and variability. Responsibilities are varied in collaboration with teaching and other professional staff and include: supporting students with Autism SpectrumDisorder and students with developmental disabilities;participation in pool programs academic support implementing special programs support to deaf/hard of hearing or visually impaired students physiotherapy exercises and stretches.

Educational Assistants may be required to modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities and speech/language issues. Assignments may also include outside yard duties lifting toileting and/or pool duties. Knowledge of Ontario Curriculum and educational communication software such as Dragon and Kurzweil are assets.

Candidate Profile:

The successful candidate will possess a community college diploma in Developmental Services Worker Child and Youth Care/Worker or equivalent and a minimum of 1-2 years of related experience with school aged special needs children. Equivalent programs must be assessed by People Culture and Leadershipstaff. Valid First Aid certification/CPR Level C is required. The successful candidate will have also completed Non-Violent Crisis Intervention TCI and/or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS)training. Please ensure that you include copies of your diploma(s) and/or certificates that are applicable to the qualifications of an Educational Assistant.

Intermediate/Secondary Safe Schools Educational Assistant

Supports classroom social work and psychology staff in delivering non-academic programming support to students in the SDSP (Support During Suspension Program)

Supports individual students using evidence based practice in building social emotional skills including management of emotions peer relationships executive functioning stress management and coping

Required Skills and Abilities :

Child & Youth Worker Diploma or equivalent combination of skills education and experience required

Experience supporting intermediate/secondary students particularly those with a history of behavioural and/or safety concerns

Knowledge and experience in the use of varied programming strategies and accommodations for intermediate/ secondary students

Ability to work effectively with a team including classroom staff administrators and multi-disciplinary professionals.

Flexible and adaptable with strong interpersonal and communication skills

Understanding of the need for culturally relevant services and the need to bridge and broker relationships across cultures

Knowledge of Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) with an emphasis on a relationship based approach to interventions is an asset.

Behaviour Management Systems and ASIST training are preferred

Additional Comments : Candidates will be assigned to Safe Schools at either Richard Pfaff or Elizabeth Wynwood. Travel will be required to support students transitioning schools. This role will contain an itinerant component.
