Job Purpose
- As Director of the Logistics Team you will serve as a member of DCLIs Operations Department reporting directly to the AVP Marine Operations.
- Responsible for overseeing DCLIs West Coast logistics operations including strategic planning operational execution and the implementation of best practices in transportation and inventory management to support business objectives.
- Skilled relationship builder who leverages key contacts across the intermodal industryincluding marine terminals railroads NVOCCs BCOs motor carriers and steamship linesto advance DCLIs strategic objectives.
- Develop and present business proposals to leadership that clearly define issues offer actionable recommendations and include data-driven business cases in a format tailored for senior leadership
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide daily guidance to the WC Logistics team to ensure that the department is achieving the appropriate level of chassis availability to meet West Coast demand.
- Lead mentor and develop logistics team; establish performance metrics and ensure accountability for results.
- Serve as the liaison for all SSL customers; making sure the team is providing daily West Coast updates as well as ad-hoc updates based on critical service regions.
- Define and track KPIs related to asset utilization service performance on-time delivery and cost.
- Manage and optimize inventory availability and positioning of intermodal assets
- Review financial performance monthly versus budget and provide operational explanations on the monthly financial reviews highlighting positive or negative trends against budget.
- Provide leadership with digestible insight-rich reporting to drive informed decisions.
- Propose solutions to senior management to address service process and/or savings opportunities based on the monitoring of all department metrics (reported to senior management on a weekly basis):
- Cost savings
- Unbudgeted expenses
- Service failures
- Chassis repositioning moves
- Sales/deliveries and idle equipment
- Monitoring idle equipment; establish clear inventory reconciliation process for WC markets
- Ensure team maintains data integrity by monitoring DCLI reports and systems; recommend dashboard creation to analytics team to ensure key metrics are being measured and reported.
- Monitor all costs associated with repositioning and other general operating expenses identifying costs that are deviating from budget and providing solutions to mitigate or explanations to the Senior Management that justify the spend.
- Understand Terms and Conditions of Lease Drayage and Container Yard contracts.
- Ensure cost and billing accuracy by ensuring all repositioning work orders are validated and invoiced in a timely manner. Develop a process to ensure all gate and storage fees are billed correctly.
- Represent DCLI in the market and collaborate closely with customers BCOs and NVOCCs to ensure reliable service and customer satisfaction.
- Represent DCLIs interests in industry forums and customer engagements to advance strategic initiatives.
- Participate in ad-hoc cross-functional/strategic projects as required including business and profitability analysis compliance and theoretical analysis.
- Responsible for market research to identify current trends and use statistical and analytical tools to predict future trends and patterns which could affect DCLI.
- Maintain communication and relationships with the DCLI management team and liaise with other business units to promote working relationships and common goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree
- 812 years of progressive experience in logistics and supply chain management including leadership roles.
- Emphasis in either Logistics Operations Intermodal Transportation Supply Chain Management Economics Marketing or Communications.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal including the ability to speak publicly
- Ability to think conceptually and theoretically
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment Drug screening.

- Supervise a regional team consisting of a Sr. Manager & 2-3 Logistics Managers
