Job Description

Qualifications:

  • Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educators Licensure is required (SPED ESL or ELL Licensure Preferred).
  • Bachelors or higher level degree in Music Education
  • MA DESE Certification in Music Education K-12
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff parents and members of the community
  • Experience in teaching Elementary Music in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment
  • Proficiency in Kodaly/Conversational Solfege pedagogy
  • Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
  • Commitment to changing lives through music education

Responsibilities / Terms of Employment:

  • As per the Somerville Educators Union Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Acquisition and distribution of string instruments throughout the school district
  • Instruct students on the proper maintenance of the instrument
  • Distribution of appropriate grade level string repertoire
  • Referral of string instruments for repair or replacement
  • Preparation of students for annual school performances (Winter & Spring Concerts)
  • Preparation of students for annual districtwide performances (Spring String Fling)
  • Recommend students for participation in Berklee City Music private lessons or similar programs
  • Acquisition return and storage of district instruments
  • Sets up and maintains a professional website
  • Communication with families about student behaviors and upcoming performances
