Job Description

Qualifications:
- Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educators Licensure is required (SPED ESL or ELL Licensure Preferred).
- Bachelors or higher level degree in Music Education
- MA DESE Certification in Music Education K-12
- Strong communication skills both oral and written
- Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff parents and members of the community
- Experience in teaching Elementary Music in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment
- Proficiency in Kodaly/Conversational Solfege pedagogy
- Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
- Commitment to changing lives through music education
Responsibilities / Terms of Employment:
- As per the Somerville Educators Union Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Acquisition and distribution of string instruments throughout the school district
- Instruct students on the proper maintenance of the instrument
- Distribution of appropriate grade level string repertoire
- Referral of string instruments for repair or replacement
- Preparation of students for annual school performances (Winter & Spring Concerts)
- Preparation of students for annual districtwide performances (Spring String Fling)
- Recommend students for participation in Berklee City Music private lessons or similar programs
- Acquisition return and storage of district instruments
- Sets up and maintains a professional website
- Communication with families about student behaviors and upcoming performances
