The Infectious Diseases Section of the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health (NCSLPH) seeks a Bioinformatics Analyst to support public health surveillance through genomic data analysis. This position works closely with the sequencing and bioinformatics team to implement data-driven approaches that enhance epidemiological investigations and pathogen surveillance efforts across the state.
This role contributes directly to outbreak investigations and routine surveillance by developing and validating analytical pipelines producing genomic reports and supporting data sharing and visualization. The position involves cross-collaboration with laboratory scientists epidemiologists and public health partners to ensure that next-generation sequencing (NGS) efforts are scientifically sound and operationally effective.
Key Duties Include:
Perform bioinformatic analyses on NGS datasets to identify and characterize pathogens of public health significance.
Develop and validate WGS/NGS analysis pipelines and associated standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Create evaluate and customize open-source and commercial bioinformatics tools for internal use.
Build and maintain databases for pathogen-specific sequence data and metadata.
Train laboratory and informatics staff on bioinformatic tools software and workflows.
Develop training programs and materials to support internal staff and fellows.
Collaborate with the Molecular Epidemiologist to improve genomic data reporting and sharing.
Serve as a technical resource for laboratory management and external partners regarding sequencing data interpretation.
Compile and present bioinformatics findings in internal reports scientific presentations and stakeholder communications.
Provide surge capacity and technical support during public health emergencies including SARS-CoV-2 response activities.

Compensation and Benefits: Demonstrated experience developing data visualizations or dashboards for genomic data such as using R Python or similar platforms. Documented experience with Linux and command-line tools in a bioinformatics environment preferably in genomics or microbiology. Experience integrating genomic and epidemiologic data to support outbreak investigations or surveillance. Demonstrated experience analyzing NGS datasets using tools like BWA Samtools or similar preferably in a public health or clinical setting.
