Job Description

Ophthalmology Fellow

About the role
Dunedin Hospital has almost 400 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 350000 spread over the lower South Island of New Zealand. Being a Tertiary Hospital for our district our staff enjoy close relationships with the University of Otago School of Medicine and Otago Polytechnic School of benefit from continuous professional development involvement with medical and nursing student training in-situ and remote stimulation training participation in research and many more opportunities arising from working in a combined clinical-academic environment.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Ophthalmology 5th Year Registrar or General Fellow to join our dynamic team at Dunedin Public Hospital and associated clinics. This is a full-time position with a 1.0 FTE designed to provide comprehensive training and experience across all subspecialties in ophthalmology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Practice: Engage in 3-4 specialty clinics per week covering areas such as Cornea Oculoplastic Glaucoma Paediatrics Vitreoretinal Ocular Oncology Uveitis and General Ophthalmology.
  • Surgical Experience: Participate in 2-3 operating sessions per week utilizing facilities at the Day Surgery on Filleul Street and the main operating theatre at Dunedin Public Hospital.
  • Post-Acute Care: Provide essential services in the post-acute ophthalmology clinic ensuring high-quality patient care and follow-up.
  • Teaching: Lead and contribute to educational sessions for peers and junior staff to foster a learning environment.
  • Research: Participate in research projects particularly focusing on innovative advancements in ophthalmology with supervision by Dr. Sheng Hong.
  • Administrative Duties: Complete necessary administrative tasks to support clinical and surgical operations.

About you
We are a tertiary level hospital with a full range of elective and acute surgical specialities and can offer you a varied and challenging array of Ophthalmology work. Ideally we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience to complement our team:

  • An excellent general Ophthalmology skill set.
  • A team player with exceptional interpersonal skills who builds effective relationships both within and external to their team
  • Is solution focussed and can demonstrate excellent decision making and priority setting in a clinical environment
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and passing on their knowledge to junior members of staff

To be eligible to apply for this role you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of at least four years in an accredited ophthalmology residency program.
  • Eligibility for General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in clinical and surgical ophthalmology skills.
  • Strong commitment to academic medicine including teaching research and continuous learning.

We will consider applicants from overseas training schemes where the candidate has completed all their exams and advanced training runs and will be in their final year of training.

Working Conditions:

  • Participate in an on-call rotation as the second on-call to providecritical support and emergency care as needed. On call ratio of 1 in 4 which will be discussed with the succeessful candidate.
  • The role involves regular weekday hours with some weekend and night shifts due to on-call responsibilities.
  • The position requires flexibility to work across multiple sites and adapt to various clinical settings.

This role belongs to the Salary: ASMS MECA 2024 Fellow Scale (NZD 179480 per annum pro rata).
