Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is a model 4 voluntary academic teaching hospital partnered with Trinity College and situated in south west Dublin. With a staff of over 4000 people from 63 differentcountries it provides both acute and tertiary care to an increasing population of circa 800000 people and is a provider of local regional and national specialties. It is also a National Urology Centre the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country Pelvic and Acetabulum National Centre and a designated Trauma Unit.

purpose of the role:
The Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist will provide an appropriate and evidence-based clinical service to inpatients and outpatients in the TUH catchment area.
A virtual Fracture Assessment Clinic (vFAC) is an innovative service that allows a patients injury to be reviewed remotely utilising radiological information and case notes from a computer by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and a physiotherapist without the patient having to physically attend an appointment at the orthopaedic clinic in person. The patients X-rays and notes will be reviewed and a clinical management plan decided before telephoning them to discuss their case and treatment. Some patients may be discharged by phone other patients that need further review are booked into the appropriate orthopaedic sub-specialist clinic and some may be referred for conservative management such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop pathways between hospital and primary care so that patients can be referred to TUH and so that follow-up therapy can take place in the primary care setting where appropriate. Included in this will be education to primary care therapists on identification of suitable patients and best practice recommendations
  • Undertake an appropriate assessment draw up individual treatment plans and provide effective treatment to all referred patients to the speciality
  • Set and maintain a high standard of clinical practice
  • Ensure that privacy and dignity of the patient is respected at all times
  • Liaise with patients carers and other health professionals to ensure a holistic approach to patient care
  • Maintain good communications with Consultants General Practitioners and community care team members for early discharge and adequate follow up
  • Plan and implement a care package from hospital to home
  • Keep abreast with current changes in clinical practice by attending seminars conferences and post-graduate courses
  • Maintain an accurate record-keeping system to comply with legal requirements to support clinical studies and to provide information for data collection
  • Attend clinics team meetings and / or ward rounds when necessary
  • Play an active role in the departmental in-service training and teaching programme for other health professionals
  • Organise and facilitate the running of national and international courses
  • Supervise teach and advise junior staff students and ancillary staff working in the speciality
  • Liaise with teaching staff and participate in the clinical training and assessment of physiotherapy students
  • Facilitate and jointly supervise undergraduate research projects
  • Actively participate in multi-disciplinary and multi-centred trials
  • Attend mandatory training programmes
  • Responsible for the organisation and provision of the physiotherapy service for patients admitted in the area of speciality to which he/she is assigned
  • Keep records appropriate to his / her office as may be required
  • Participate in clinical audit activities to monitor clinical standards
  • Comply with departmental policies on data collection administrative procedures and health and safety guidelines
  • Do regular appraisals with staff
  • Advise manager on planning and development of speciality area in liaison with senior staff of other disciplines
  • Ensure safe working environment for patients and staff and report immediately any accident either staff or patient
  • Assist with induction of junior staff to the department
  • Read and act upon all issued staff policies
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned to her/him by the Physiotherapy Manager
Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:
  • Hold a Physiotherapy qualification recognised by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU. Please see list of acceptable Physiotherapy qualifications
registered on the Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORUAnd
  • Have the clinical and administrative capacity to fulfill the functions of the role
And
  • Demonstrate evidence of formal continuing professional development relevant to the required area of specialism in the form of post-graduate qualifications or relevant courses
And
  • Demonstrate a proven record of clinical excellence and achievement in the areas of clinical audit quality improvement initiatives practice development advanced clinical reasoning teaching and research
And
  • Hold a minimum of 5 full time (or equivalent) years post qualification experience of which a minimum of 3 years full time (or equivalent) experience in musculoskeletal* physiotherapy in an out-patient setting (hospital or primary care outpatient department or in private practice).
(*Musculoskeletal physiotherapy experience can be acquired in out-patient orthopaedics rheumatology hand therapy occupational health emergency department primary care or general musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Experience in an out patients setting in primary care secondary care and private practice settings are reckonable.)

  • Must have avalidEU work permit/visa

Desirable:
  • Clinical MSc Physiotherapy relevant to the post
  • Previous experience in Trauma Assessment Clinic
  • Previous experience in Inpatient Orthopaedics
  • Previous experience in musculoskeletal triage
  • First contact experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Advanced Practice Physiotherapy training (e.g. radiology bloods injection therapy ultrasound APP specific courses)
Reward & Recognition
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales grade code 3707.
  • The appointment is full time temporary and pensionable. A panel will be created for future part time and full time temporary opportunities.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 29 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 35 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
