Head of Clinical Engineering Clinical Engineering (CE) Department

Purpose of the role:

The Head of Clinical Engineering provides senior leadership and strategic direction for all activities related to medical technology within TUH. The principal purpose of this role is to ensure that medical devices are safe effective reliable well-managed and fully support high-quality patient care.

Reporting to Head of Facilities Operations & Service Transformation QRSM Medical Clinical Financial Directorates DCEO.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Daily Duties
  • Leadership & Staff Management
  • On call roster
  • National AIMS Management System Management
  • CORESS management and administration
  • Rigid Scope Management
  • HPRA Medical Device Alerts and Field Safety Notices
  • Management and governance on contract and repair budgets
  • Governance and compliance for all CE managed equipment
  • Governance and compliance with staff mandatory and technical training
  • Management of major and minor capital replacement
  • Vendor MDA and FSN management

Governance Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with regulations Government Frameworks and patient safety regulations.
  • Oversee risk management relating to medical devices including incident investigation and corrective measures.



Management of Clinical Engineering Services
  • Lead clinical engineering teams responsible for:
    • Maintenance calibration and repair of medical devices.
    • Acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment.
Support to Clinical Services
  • Provide expert technical consultation to clinical departments (ICU theatres ED diagnostics etc.).
Strategic Leadership
  • In this role the Head of Clinical Engineering Services will provide senior scientific support for activities related to the departmental strategy.
  • Develop in association with the other relevant staff programmes to ensure the safety of clinical practices involving sophisticated technologies with particular reference to electrical and mechanical problems.
  • Help develop implement and evaluate arrangements for the supervision calibration quality control and safety of work in the patient monitoring and physiological measurement fields.
  • Participate in the Hospitals teaching agreement with Trinity College Dublin Technological University Dublin and other academic institutions and in other academic activities as required.

Staff Management
  • Lead a professional punctual and dedicated team.
  • Assist with the recruitment selection and training of staff with professional advice and support from Human Resources and ensure their career development is in keeping with the Mission Vision and Values of the Hospital.
  • Foster open communications healthy working relationships and stimulate initiatives among the Clinical Engineering team.
  • Foster a team working environment.

Financial Aspects
    • Assist when required with the management of the budget for the Department including a budget for the management of medical equipment in the Hospital ensuring the most effective use of available resources.
    • Ensure along with other members of the departmental management team that expenditure is controlled within agreed budgets/cash limits and in compliance with the Hospitals Financial Plan and Service Plan.
    • Help maintain an Asset Register of appropriate equipment.

Stakeholder Engagement
    • Liaising with Business Directorates Nursing Clinicians HSCPs and all other departments and stakeholders using medical device technologies throughout TUH
    • SAP governance and management for all ordering within the department to also include raising and following orders when short staffed
    • HSE national equipment replacement program (NERP)
    • HSE procurement National Incident Management Systems (NIMS)
    • Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA)
    • Clinical Engineering National Profession Committee (NPC) Biomedical Engineering Association of Ireland (BEAI) National Standards Association Ireland (NSAI)
    • Other Clinical engineering departments nationally

The appointment is specified purpose full-time.

Remuneration is in accordance with the salary scale approved by the Department of Health. Current remuneration with effect from August 2025 is:-

Qualifications & Experience
Must have:
  • Honours . Degree in Engineering/Physics (or equivalent)
  • 7 years relevant experience in Clinical Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years Supervisory / Management experience
  • Practical experience of use of IT systems / packages
  • Fluent command and understanding of the English language to include spoken and written word
