Job Summary
The Historic Architect plans researches and executes the preservation restoration and rehabilitation projects for historic buildings and sites on a cultural resource project.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No

Duties/Responsibilities
Responsible for cultural investigations involving historic structures including but not limited to; preservation laws and regulations inventory assessment of impacts and documentation building condition assessments historic structure reports conservation of historic materials and systems treatment of historic materials and systems preservation maintenance of historic materials and systems and preservation-related life safety issues.
Conducts thorough assessments of historic structures to determine their condition historical significance and restoration needs.
Develops preservation and restoration plans that comply with local state and national preservation standards including the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
Prepares technical drawings specifications and documentation for preservation projects using CAD software and other relevant tools.
Provides expert guidance on materials techniques and technologies suitable for the restoration and preservation of historic buildings.
Oversees the implementation of preservation projects ensuring adherence to design specifications and preservation best practices.
Stays informed of advancements in historic preservation and sustainability to incorporate best practices into project plans.

Required Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of historic preservation theory and practices including the ability to assess the historical significance of buildings develop preservation plans and implement restoration or rehabilitation projects that respect the structures original design and materials.
Proficiency in architectural design particularly in adapting and applying traditional design principles to meet contemporary needs while preserving historical character.
Comprehensive knowledge of local state and national preservation laws and guidelines including the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and experience navigating the historic designation and review process.
Ability to conduct thorough historical research and architectural investigations to uncover a buildings history and original condition. This includes analyzing architectural drawings photographs and other historical documents.
Competence in managing the entire lifecycle of a preservation project including planning budgeting scheduling and overseeing construction to ensure projects are completed on time within budget and to the required standards.
The ability to assess problems that arise during the preservation process and devise effective creative solutions that respect the buildings historical significance and physical integrity.
A keen eye for detail is vital both in designing interventions that are sympathetic to the original architecture and in the careful execution of conservation and restoration work.
An understanding and respect for the cultural significance of the architectural heritage being preserved. This includes recognizing the importance of buildings and sites not only for their architectural merit but also for their place in the historical and cultural landscape.
Knowledge of sustainable preservation practices and the ability to incorporate energy efficiency and sustainability into preservation projects without compromising the historical integrity of structures.
Education and Experience
Required: Professional degree in architecture or a State license to practice architecture
Required: Must also possess one of the following
At least one (1) year of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects. Such experience shall include detailed investigations of historic structures preparation of historic structure research reports and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones etc.
