Job Description

Job Summary

The Archaeological Principal Investigator conducts archaeological and architectural surveys to identify evaluate and document historic properties in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) at Fort Campbell Kentucky. This role involves leading Phase I and Phase II archaeological investigations conducting architectural evaluations preparing technical reports and ensuring all work aligns with federal state and Army cultural resource management standards.

Duty Station: Fort Campbell Kentucky

Travel: Up to 10%. Contingent on business needs

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct Phase I archaeological surveys including background research shovel testing site mapping artifact recovery and field documentation.

  • Perform Phase II evaluations of archaeological sites for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) including excavation analysis and reporting.

  • Carry out architectural evaluations of historic structures in accordance with 36 CFR Part 61 and SHPO guidelines including archival research field documentation and assessment of historical integrity.

  • Prepare high-quality technical reports (Draft and Final) documenting research methods fieldwork results site evaluations mapping and NRHP eligibility recommendations.

  • Ensure all field and reporting activities comply with State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) standards for Kentucky and Tennessee Fort Campbell requirements and Secretary of the Interior (SOI) Standards.

  • Maintain accurate field records including journals survey forms maps photographic logs and GIS data.

  • Collaborate with Fort Campbell Cultural Resources Program Manager (CRPM) and consult with SHPOs to ensure compliance with NHPA Sections 106 and 110.

  • Safeguard artifacts and records ensuring proper cleaning cataloging conservation and curation in line with Fort Campbells Standard Operating Procedures for Cultural Resource Management Firms.

  • Participate in safety security and compliance programs including background checks iWATCH OPSEC and OSHA requirements.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of NHPA Section 106/110 compliance NRHP eligibility criteria and cultural resource management practices.

  • Strong field skills in archaeological excavation survey techniques and architectural evaluations.

  • Ability to prepare professional-level cultural resource reports including technical writing mapping and analysis.

  • Proficiency with GIS GPS and Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word Excel Access PowerPoint).

  • Familiarity with SHPO standards (Tennessee and Kentucky) and Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

  • Strong organizational analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work independently in field conditions and manage multiple concurrent tasks and deadlines.

  • Excellent communication skills for coordination with government officials SHPOs and cultural resource stakeholders.

Education and Experience

  • : Masters degree in Archaeology Anthropology Historic Preservation Architecture or related field.

  • : Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in archaeological or architectural survey evaluation and reporting.

  • Required: At least 1 year of full- time professional experience at a supervisory level in your field of study of the prehistoric period

  • Preferred: Principal Investigator (PI) or equivalent qualification under 36 CFR Part 61 professional standards.

  • Preferred: Experience with cultural resource projects in the Great Plains or southeastern U.S. region.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform prolonged fieldwork including walking long distances digging shovel tests carrying equipment and working in varied weather conditions.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk for report preparation and computer work.

  • Routine use of standard office equipment such as computers phones and GPS/GIS equipment.
