This fixed term opportunity is expected to run until August 2026 and is an opportunity to showcase your strategic leadership and problem-solving skills.

Bring this experience to lead and support the Ministrys work to provide advice on the parameters rules and incentives which govern the health system.

Joining the Strategy Group you will have a part in influencing the strategic direction for the health system to improve New Zealands health outcomes.

We provide high quality policy advice to the Ministers and government to inform the decisions they make on the health portfolio at a system level.

Within the Strategy Group the System Accountability and Settings team is responsible for designing embedding and reviewing the settings that hold the health system accountable for delivering on government priorities statutory functions and public expectations.

In this role you will lead and contribute to high-impact cross cutting work focused on improving how the system is designed directed and held to account. This includes:

  • Designing embedding and reviewing policy settings to ensure the health system is set up to deliver Government priorities.
  • Advising on Government priorities for the health system including through the Government Policy Statement on Health.
  • Responsible for professional peer reviews and coaching of Senior Policy Analysts and Policy Analysts work to ensure quality validity accuracy and consistency
  • Lead preparation and drafting of policy advice documents legislation.
  • Contributing to the wider strategy and policy work of the Ministry and health system

Your role involves reviewing colleagues work leading projects and ensuring high-quality policy advice.

  • Strong strategic and systems policy thinking skills the ability to hold an overview across a broad system and find linkages and opportunities to get things done. Knowledge and experience of successfully navigating government and working collaboratively with senior stakeholders across government and the health system.
  • An ability to advise and influence senior stakeholders.
  • A thorough understanding of public policy issues and political considerations and demonstrated success in leading complex work and operating in ambiguity.
  • Understanding of quality policy advice and coaching members to deliver to a high standard
  • A strong understanding of how legislative and regulatory instruments can be applied to deliver better economic and social outcomes and improve health outcomes.
