Position Overview
The Analyst plays an integral role in the annual development of PSFs State of Salmon report (). The Analyst will work closely with a small internal team including PSFs State of Salmon Project Manager PSFs Senior Analyst and the Senior Director Salmon Programs to update evolve and build out PSFs State of Salmon report. The Analyst will lead the development of new content for the 2026 State of Salmon report that summarizes the current state of knowledge on the primary factors affecting the state of salmon based on a comprehensive literature review. Developing this content will require deep familiarity with the salmon conservation literature and a thorough understanding of fisheries management and the overall Pacific salmon management context. The Analyst will lead PSFs ongoing efforts to develop and revise report content based on annual assessment outcomes with the opportunity to also contribute to data analysis and assessments relevant to the State of Salmon report. The Analyst will also monitor summarize and report back to senior PSF staff on pre-season in-season and post-season Pacific salmon assessments. The Analyst will develop familiarity with the Pacific salmon data landscape in order to lead annual data compilation efforts. This will require establishing and ideally leveraging positive working relationships with external data custodians to ensure that PSFs state of salmon reporting utilizes the best available data.
What You Will Do
- Undertake literature reviews to characterize and describe the current factors affecting the state of salmon.
- Develop content summarizing the current state of salmon based on annual data updates and create content for new sections of the report such as the factors affecting the state of salmon.
- Monitor summarize and report back to senior PSF staff on relevant pre-season in-season and post-season stock assessment and fisheries management processes.
- Establish and maintain close working relationships with data custodians to ensure access to the best available salmon data required to support state of salmon analyses.
- Compile and synthesize Pacific salmon datasets from a wide variety of data custodians and data sources.
- Provide input on the ongoing development and visual design of the State of Salmon website.
- Create and maintain technical documentation including metadata for the various data sources.
- Work with external partners (e.g. DFO First Nations academics) to solicit feedback on assessments and work collaboratively to adapt and improve state of salmon assessment methods and approaches.
- Generate easy-to-understand data products to communicate state of salmon findings including graphs figures infographics briefs and other visually compelling displays for the purposes of internal and external communications.
- Work collaboratively with PSF staff on research projects including contributing to literature reviews analytical support and writing.
- Assist with grant development efforts and proposal writing.
What You Bring
- A graduate degree in fisheries ecology biology natural resource management or a related field preferably with a focus in fisheries science and management.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience working with relevant agencies responsible for managing Pacific salmon fisheries (e.g. DFO Pacific Salmon Commission) of which at least 3 years involve progressive experience analyzing evaluating and interpreting Pacific salmon data.
- Strong understanding of domestic and international salmon management including experience with Pacific Salmon Treaty related management and stock assessment processes.
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations on salmon assessment management and conservation.
- Advanced knowledge of Pacific salmon biology ecology life cycles and factors affecting survival with experience conducting research and literature reviews.
- Proficiency in applying analytical approaches for characterizing salmon population status and dynamics. Experience using version control (GitHub) and R Markdown/R Shiny an asset but not required.
- Demonstrated experience in science communication for diverse audiences contributing to technical reports lay reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Excellent organizational skills attention to detail and ability to manage technical documentation.

- Base pay: The salary range for the Analyst role is $75000 $88500. The actual salary offered will depend on skills experience and the contribution the successful candidate is expected to make in the role.
