We are currently accepting applications for Educational Assistant . Under the direction and the supervision of the Principal and in consultation with the Learning Resource Teacher (LRT) and classroom teacher the Educational Assistant is responsible for the provision of support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position involves dealing with confidential information and requires ongoing flexibility and support of student learning teaching and other professional staff the responsibilities are many and varied and include any or all of the following: supporting the instruction of individual and/or groups of students in an academic and/or integrated class environment overseeing special education students and implementing special education programs related to behaviour communication intellectual or physical needs where required.

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of specific social/emotional and physical needs of students with learning disabilities behavioural challenges developmental disabilities or physical challenges.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Incumbents must possess a secondary school diploma and two year or three year Community College Diploma in one of the following: Child & Youth Worker Registered Early Childhood Educator* Behavioral Science Technician Educational Assistant Developmental Services Worker or Social Service Worker Registered Nurse** Registered Nursing Assistant or Registered Practical Nurse**
  • Bachelor Degrees in Child Studies Sociology and Psychology will be recognized.
  • Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training/certification is an asset.
  • Related work experience would be an asset.

*RECE registration in good standing

**Nursing diplomas must be accompanied by proof of current certification

Skills Required:


  • Possesses individual knowledge and skills applied in the support of student behaviour communication intellectual or physical needs (e.g. sign language non-violent crisis intervention behaviour management skills)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of specific social/emotional and physical needs of students with learning disabilities behavioural challenges developmental disabilities or physical challenges
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Well-developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Working knowledge of word processing Internet e-mail and related educational computer programs
  • Ability to interact appropriately with students parents co-workers Board personnel and community agencies
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and non-confrontational under pressure
  • High degree of confidentiality diplomacy tact and discretion is essential
  • Ability to act as both a team player and independently with minimal supervision

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • In collaboration with the classroom teacher and the LRT supports the development and implementation of goals based on the academic needs of the students and as outlined in the IEP for student success.
  • Supports the development implementation review evaluation revision and monitoring of therapeutic programs as identified by Board personnel and external agencies.
  • Administers medication and maintains medication records when authorized to do so by the school Administrator or designate in accordance with Board policy and protocols student safety and in compliance with medication prescription.
  • Adheres to the student plan of personal/physical care needs (e.g. dressing feeding lifting and toileting supporting catherization care) in support of student safety and well-being.
  • Supports and encourages the use of a variety of adaptive and assistive technology in response to unique learning needs and to support the communication needs of students
  • Supports the communication needs of a student through sign language braille speech impediment exercises augmentative communication methods and interpreting where required
  • Supports the teachers student records by gathering and maintaining data/records/forms/daily logs of student progress behavior and implementation of special education programs
  • In consultation with the school based and system based teams supports the teaching staff in implementing reviewing evaluating revising and monitoring behavior management programs for students
  • Adheres to a students safety and behaviour plans and the strategies to support them according to Board policies
  • Communicates/liaises with students teachers parents/guardians agencies and other professionals regarding student progress as directed by the Principal and coordinated by the LRT and/or Classroom Teacher
  • Supervises students as directed and coordinated by the Principal throughout the school environment for student safety which includes but not limited to yard supervision bus supervision classroom and gym supervision
  • Attends student and staff meetings case conferences (e.g. IPRCs student/teacher interviews) and provides input of a professional nature where required that addresses the implementation of programs
  • Participates in professional development to acquire and maintain skills in support of position (e.g. adaptive software training CPR BMS etc.)
  • Attends and participates in Student Success Team meetings and professional development as required.
  • Demonstrates good attendance and works in a healthy and safe manner
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
