Job Description

Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg Germany is the largest solar research institute in Europe. For our group III-V Semiconductor Technology we are looking for a PhD student on the topic Photonic rear side structures for III-V based high efficiency photovoltaic cells for 01.07.2023. You want to do a PhD and actively shape the energy transition With us you can achieve these goals as a PhD student. The focus of this dissertation is on the microfabrication of rear side mirrors with photonic structures in high-efficiency III-V-based photovoltaic cells. The content of the work is the development of highly efficient photonic reflectors as a combination of photonic structure and planar rear side mirror and the minimization of the currently still relevant parasitic absorption in these structures. The work is carried out within the department III-V Photovoltaics and Concentrator Technology in a dynamic interdisciplinary and internationally leading research team and is supervised by experienced scientists engineers and technicians. The dissertation is embedded in current research projects. The results will be published in international journals.

What you will do

  • The goal of your PhD is the realization of a highly reflective but at the same time electrically conductive rear side mirror for III-V thin film photovoltaic cells.
  • You will develop a process chain based on nanoimprint lithography and etching processes for the integration of photonic structures in III-V solar cells.
  • Your research tasks also include combining the photonic structures with a rear sidemirror in III-V thin film solar cells while minimizing losses.
  • You will undertake wave optical modeling of photonic structures for integration into III-V based PV cells.
  • The investigation of photon recycling and luminescence coupling effects in different III-V based PV cell concepts with photonic structures is also part of your research tasks.
  • You will exploit the scientific results and present them in journals and at conferences.

What you bring to the table

  • You have a university degree in physics microsystems technology or a comparable field.
  • Ideally you have already gained experience in laboratory work as well as in semiconductor processing in a clean room laboratory.
  • You have a sound knowledge of photovoltaics microsystems technology semiconductor physics semiconductor processing and related processes such as photolithography wet chemical etching deposition processes etc.
  • It is important to you to contribute to your team and also to achieve common goals in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • You are used to working independently and can both correctly assess the consequences of your actions and use them for further development.
  • The routine handling of MS-Office is self-evident for you and ideally you have already worked with Origin.
  • You have already successfully demonstrated your excellent written and spoken English skills.
  • You are willing to travel at home and abroad.
