Job Duties
Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.
Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12 months of service. Current Virginia State Police employees working in a Dispatcher function are not eligible for a retention bonus.
About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Senior Dispatcher at our Division 5 Headquarters in Chesapeake Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:
Functioning as the lead worker in the Communications Center to train and provide guidance to new dispatchers.
Providing assistance to law enforcement and emergency personnel the public and the media.
Operating within a specific geographic area by sending and receiving information and sending emergency assistance or service equipment to assist law enforcement personnel or the public.
Operating a variety of equipment.
Maintaining logs and records.
Accessing information through systems including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Virginia Crime Information Center (VCIN) National Crime Information Center (NCIC) National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (NLETS) and other data bases.
May work rotating shifts and is considered essential personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
Of operations of a communications center.
Of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) communications equipment.
Of multi-use system phone lines.
Of rules and regulations pertaining to emergency communications equipment and operations.
Skills:
In operating a computer and using Microsoft software applications.
In operating a variety of communication equipment including radio transmitters and receivers.
In using computerized communication terminals.
In keyboarding.
Abilities:
To monitor operations to ensure efficient and continuous operation in compliance with Department Policy.
To monitor entries inquiries and retrievals in CAD VCIN/NCIC and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) according to established procedures.
To maintain records and logs.
To lead and provide guidance training and formal instruction to shift personnel.
To effectively communicate with the public and Department employees especially in stressful situations.
To work in a high pressure high stress high volume environment and exercise sound judgement under stress prioritizing multiple responsibilities.
To communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
To work effectively independently and as a member of a team.
To work holidays weekends and rotating shifts.
Prior experience as a police/emergency service dispatcher.
Must be eligible to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified which requires either United States citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
