Clinical Coder

HIM/Clinical Coder/Medical Records

The Opportunity

In this role you will report to the Coding Manager at North Shore Private Hospital to ensure data is collected collated and managed in line with hospital and relative legislative requirements. You will be required to provide accurate and timely coding of diagnosis and procedures using current coding standards.

You will be processing confidential data which is used for billing morbidity collections research statistical analysis management information systems quality activities and casemix management including Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) allocation.

Duties and responsibilities involve but are not limited to:

  • Effectively following-up information that is absent in the medical record or documentation that is ambiguous requiring further qualification to identify the highest specificity;
  • Liaising with clinical and administrative staff to obtain accurate information to facilitate coding; and
  • Participate in regular continuing professional education.

With implementation of SMR (Scanned Medical Records) North Shore Private is able to offer a flexible work arrangements including hybrid-model options that will allow successful applicant to negotiate a work from home arrangement.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will work effectively both within a team environment and independently as required. Your ability to maintain positive relationships and strong communication networks with all stakeholders and departments ensuring all quality outcomes are achieved is crucial for this role.

  • Clinical Coding qualifications from Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) or equivalent or Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management)
  • Experience in abstracting and coding across a wide Casemix
  • Sound and updated knowledge of ICD-10-AM 13thedition National and local coding standards.
  • Sound and updated knowledge of Medical Science and Medical Terminology
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and patient Management Systems
  • Good analytical and abstracting skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of DRG and Casemix
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and effectively manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to take on continuing study
  • Knowledge and understanding of current Privacy legislation
  • Ability to liaise with clinicians and hospital staff about coding and documentation requirements
  • Excellent prioritisation and time management skills

Remuneration

On offer is base hourly rate ranging from $44.73 to $49.04 superannuation depending on experience and qualifications. This excludes penalties or allowances.

The Hospital

North Shore Private Hospital is a 313-bed medical/surgical hospital which performs most surgical specialties including cardiothoracic neurosurgery orthopaedics advanced general and colorectal urology spinal surgery paediatrics oncology and medical care.
