Inviting Applications for the Position of

District Safety and Health Manager

The District Safety and Health Manager is responsible for providing strategic leadership expert guidance and operational oversight to ensure the health safety and well-being of all staff and students across the District. This role is accountable for maintaining compliance with WorkSafeBC legislation and related health and safety regulations managing workplace injury claims and fostering a strong safety culture in alignment with the Districts mission and values.

Key Responsibilities:

Health and Safety Program Leadership

  • Develop implement and monitor the Districts Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR) and other applicable legislation.
  • Lead safety initiatives audits inspections and risk assessments across all sites.
  • Maintain and update District safety policies and procedures.


Training and Education
  • Coordinate and deliver occupational health and safety training programs (e.g. WHMIS violence prevention ergonomics emergency response).
  • Provide ongoing support and resources to site-based safety committees and administrators.
  • Educate staff and supervisors on their roles and responsibilities under the Workers Compensation Act and OHSR.


WorkSafeBC Claims and Return to Work
  • Oversee the management of WorkSafeBC claims including incident investigation reporting and follow-up.
  • Act as the District liaison with WorkSafeBC health care providers and third-party claims management partners.
  • Coordinate return-to-work and stay-at-work plans for injured employees in collaboration with site supervisors HR and unions where applicable.


Leadership and Collaboration
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to senior leadership principals supervisors and staff on all safety-related matters.
  • Lead and support site-based Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSC).
  • Collaborate with the Emergency Preparedness Manager on initiatives related to employee wellness building safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a culture of safety and shared accountability.


Monitoring and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate documentation of safety activities training investigations and claims.
  • Prepare regular reports on injury trends WorkSafeBC claims data and safety program performance for senior leadership and the Board as required.
  • Identify and track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to safety and health.


Qualifications:


Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary education program completion in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g. CRSP) is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety preferably in a unionized public sector or educational environment.
  • Experience managing WorkSafeBC claims and leading return-to-work programs.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license is required


Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough understanding of WorkSafeBC regulations Workers Compensation Act and OHSR.
  • Foster strong collaborative relationships with staff union representatives administrators and external partners to promote a culture of safety trust and shared responsibility across the District.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver safety training and conduct workplace investigations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a proactive approach.
  • Ability to analyze data and trends to inform decision-making and program improvements.
  • High level of discretion and ability to manage sensitive confidential information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety management software systems.


Working Conditions:
  • Primarily office-based with regular visits to school and District sites.
  • Occasionally requires availability outside standard hours to respond to incidents or support urgent safety matters.


Compensation & Benefits:
  • Competitive annual salary range: $83339 $104173 based on qualifications and experience.
  • Full-time Continuing Exempt.
  • Reports to Director of Human Resources
