Role Summary
The Process Laboratory Engineer is responsible for leading performing and supporting laboratory and pilot-scale testing of solid/liquid separation processes. This role is key in providing technical expertise to internal and external stakeholders ensuring correct equipment sizing process performance and customer satisfaction. The engineer will work cross-functionally with Sales R&D Product Engineering and Site Services to ensure world-class delivery and technical excellence.
Purpose of the Role
To act as a technical authority in sedimentation and filtration processes overseeing the preparation execution and reporting of laboratory tests that support equipment design performance validation and process optimization. The Process Laboratory Engineer contributes directly to successful project delivery technical proposals commissioning support and innovation in mineral processing.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
Plan and execute laboratory and pilot-scale testing programs for thickening filtration and clarification processes.
Analyse test results to determine equipment type size and optimal operating conditions.
Prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
Maintain lab equipment in optimal condition ensuring safety and testing accuracy.
Technical Expertise & Process Support
Act as a subject matter expert (SME) in solid/liquid separation across FLSmidth business lines.
Read and interpret PFDs P&IDs technical specifications and layout drawings.
Support flowsheet development and product selection for mineral processing projects.
Assist in commissioning activities troubleshooting and performance validation onsite.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with global teams including Sales Product Engineering and Project Execution.
Guide junior engineers and technicians in lab procedures data interpretation and documentation.
Participate in customer meetings to explain test methodology results and process selection rationale.
Project and Data Management
Manage multiple testing projects ensuring timelines quality and accuracy.
Document each testing program from proposal to final report.
Support continuous improvement of lab processes and data management practices.
Thought Leadership
Present findings in internal technical meetings and contribute to published technical papers.
Stay up to date on advances in filtration and sedimentation technologies.
Represent FLSmidth at conferences or client meetings as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelors degree in chemical engineering Metallurgical Engineering Mineral Processing or related field.
At least 5 years of experience in mining mineral processing or chemical industries with solid/liquid separation background preferred.
Previous laboratory pilot plant or field commissioning experience highly desirable.
Strong data analysis and reporting skills including use of statistical tools.
Proficiency in English and Portuguese (oral and written).
Familiarity with occupational safety practices in lab and field environments.
Must have legal work authorization in Brazil.
