Cochlear Implant - Teacher of the Deaf

Location :Cochlear Implant Department Beaumont Hospital (Will be also based in the National Childrens Hospital in the Future)

Reports to:

Grade VIII Neurocent Directorate

Salary:

Appointment will be made on the post 2011 common basic teacher pay scale (46448- 84565 ) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Hours of work:

Full-Time 35 Hours per week

The National Cochlear Implant Programme are looking to recruit a self motivated and enthusiastic teacher of the deaf to work as part of a multidisciplinary team involved in the assessment and post implant support of children with severe/profound hearing loss. This role involves some outreach work and clinic based work in the programme at Beaumont Hospital. (Full drivers licence is essential). You will be part of an established team with opportunities for further training.

Reporting Relationship

To carry out his/her duties under the direct supervision and control of the Director of the Cochlear Implant Programme or such person designed for that purposeby the Chief Executive. This person shallreport for the Hospital management purposes to the Clinical Services Co-Ordinator.

Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Teacher of the Deaf will be part of the multidisciplinary Cochlear Implant Team and
will be responsible for the following:

a) bring an educational perspective to the assessment and selection of
candidates for cochlear implantation

b) provide direct contact between home school and implant centre to promote consistency of expectations.

c) liaise between implant centre home and school regarding educational issues.

d) provide educational advice and expert input and feedback to team members.

e) counsel advise and provide accessible information to children families and teachers and other relevant professionals regarding the implant and optimal support in home and educational settings (requires knowledge of deafness and its impact on language and learning development and the curriculum.)

f) attendance at weekly clinic to meet families and to provide relevant information and support and assist with audiological testing of children as required.

g) provide information on children and families to the director of the cochlear implant programme and to team members prior to the clinic and on an ongoing basis

h) refer newly diagnosed children with hearing loss to the local Visiting Teacher of the Deaf (VTOD) following ABR testing in Temple St Hospital or Beaumont Hospital

i) assessment of children for cochlear implantation and provision of associated reports as required (may involve outreach visits)

j) contribute to team meetings and decisions regarding cochlear implantation

k) participate in counseling and information groups organized by the implant centre speech and language therapists for parents of children due to be implanted

l) support parents and teachers following initial tuning of implant(s) and provide long-term support to childrens families and teachers as appropriate.

m) establish long-term maintenance of the system in conjunction with the implant centre audiological scientists and local services.

n) monitor and evaluate audiological linguistic social educational and psychological outcomes as agreed by the multidisciplinary team.

o) review use of and progress with implant(s) in liaison with VTOD (may involve outreach visits) and provide a report advice & literature to parents and local professionals as required

p) respond to concerns regarding implant use/progress (may involve outreach visits)

q) additional input and liaison may be needed for children with complex needs and children who make slower than expected progress

r) additional input and liaison may be needed for children with a second sequential implant

s) provide advice and guidance in conjunction with audiological scientists on assistive technology used with cochlear implants

t) assist audiological scientist with initial and subsequent tuning as required

u) provide letters supporting application for educational support (e.g. resource teacher/special needs assistant) as required.

v) contribute to training for teachers with a presentation on Cochlear Implants

w) provision and updating of statistics on Educational Placement and Communication Mode of implanted children

From time to time the appointee will be required to perform such other duties appropriate to the office as assigned by the Chief Executive or designated Officer

This Job Description is not restrictive and may be updated in the light of changing needs within the service.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requirements :

(a) Possess a teaching qualification recognized by the Department of Education and Skills

(b) Post Graduate Diploma in Deaf Education or Special Education-Hearing Impairment or an equivalent qualification

(c) Experience teaching a wide range of deaf children (age and complexity) educational settings and/or communication modes

REMUNERATION

Salary is according to Department of Education and Skills common basic scale for teachers and will depend on experience and qualifications. Allowances where applicable will apply.
