Job Duties

About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Telecommunications Engineer in our Communications Division in Salem Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:

Designing engineering installing and implementing changes and additions to the Statewide Agency Radio System (STARS) local and wide area and radio management networks.
Assisting field personnel in restoring communications in the event of a failure which may require travel to the affected site.
Maintaining the integrity of the STARS information systems infrastructure.
Analyzing system logs and alarm systems to identify potential issues and identifying failures.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Of basic electrical/electronic theory power land mobile and microwave radio.

Skills:

In the operation of computers and in Microsoft Office Applications.

Abilities:

To coordinate evaluate and establish priorities for internal and external personnel.
To develop project and status reports.
To troubleshoot both analog and digital telecommunications problems.
To work with both local and wide area network devices such as servers workstations switches and routers.
To maintain the integrity and performance of network databases and security.
To communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English.
To work 24 hours on call basis.
To interact with all persons contacted internally and externally during the course of work.

Experience or Training in electrical engineering computer engineering and/or computer science.
Experience in a wide range of telecommunications and radio engineering projects that involve data voice and radio communications systems.
Possession of a valid Virginia Drivers License.
Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Experience in engineering large systems in a public safety or related agency preferred.
Certification in Microsoft MCSA or MCSE Red Hat RHCE Cisco CCNA Comp TIAs A or Network preferred.
