Job Description
Job Title: Database Administrator
Location: Washington DC (Remote work possible with approval)
Clearance/Compliance: FISMA Compliance Required
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Database Administrator (DBA) to manage maintain and optimize our mission-critical databases within an AWS cloud environment. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with SQL Server and PostgreSQL a strong understanding of database security and compliance (including FISMA) and the ability to support application teams with troubleshooting and performance tuning.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Operations and Maintenance:
- Perform scheduled maintenance tasks such as backups patches updates and performance optimization
- Monitor database performance and resolve bottlenecks
- Automate routine database tasks using scripting languages
- Maintain database documentation and participate in change management processes
- Conduct regular data integrity checks and assist with basic capacity planning
Security and Compliance:
- Implement and maintain database security policies and manage user access controls
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and support remediation efforts
- Ensure compliance with FISMA requirements including encryption access logging and audit trails
- Provide documentation and reports to support internal and external audits
- Stay current on and ensure compliance with data protection regulations and organizational security standards
Backup and Support:
- Design implement and routinely test backup and disaster recovery strategies aligned with defined RTO/RPO objectives
- Provide incident response support and coordinate with vendors during database issues
- Assist application teams with database troubleshooting optimization and performance enhancements
- Manage end-user access by configuring group permissions and resolving access issues promptly
Qualifications:
- 3 5 years of hands-on experience with major database platforms (SQL Server and PostgreSQL) in an AWS cloud environment
- Strong proficiency in SQL database tuning and performance optimization techniques
- Experience with database backup/recovery high availability and disaster recovery planning
- Familiarity with database monitoring tools and scheduling/job management
- In-depth knowledge of database security encryption methods and access control
- Experience with FISMA compliance and understanding of federal security standards
- Proficient in using vulnerability assessment tools and implementing remediation
- Experience with audit preparation and maintaining security documentation
- Ability to support application development teams and resolve database-related issues
- Background in change management processes and documentation best practices
- Strong incident response skills including coordination with external vendors
