As an essential member of the Ontario Cancer Registry operated by Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) the cancer registry analyst will work to create cancer patient data utilizing healthcare facility-based patient records electronic synoptic pathology reports and other provincial cancer related data holdings. The primary responsibilities of the cancer registry analyst are to assure that complete and accurate cancer data is generated collected analysed and maintained for all Ontario residents diagnosed with cancer. The cancer registry analyst will work with members of various Ontario Health research and analytic teams and technology services as well as external healthcare providers health information management leads privacy officers and information technology contacts in the daily course of their work.
Here is what you will be doing:
Cancer registry operations support
Retrieve undertake critical review and amend as necessary cases of resolved cancer using an electronic editing interface
Conduct this work in compliance with internationally established rules and guidelines as set out by World Health Organization International Classification of Diseases- Oncology (ICD-O) and NCI/SEER (National Cancer Institute/Surveillance Epidemiology End Results Solid Tumor Rules) all as coordinated by the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) and nationally adopted by the Canadian Council of Cancer Registries (CCCR). The CCCR sets the data standards for surveillance cancer registries that report to the Canadian Cancer Registry administered by Statistics Canada
Conduct this work in a timely manner
Participate in audits of cancer registry data and of the user interface
Work somewhat independently with supervision following established policies and procedures
Demonstrate methodical problem-solving skills and techniques
Pathology report coding
Retrieve review and classify electronic pathology reports for all OCR reportable diseases distinguishing between them and non-reportable diagnoses
Enter demographics into a manual interface review and classify paper-based pathology reports as above
Complete routine disease classification of reports in a timely manner
Perform quality assessments as required or ePath content and format
Perform UAT and quality assessment of ePath tools or their upgrades or enhancements
Participate in audits of the reports medical content as required for Clinical Services or Surveillance
Responsible for following and adhering to corporate and departmental policy/procedures and standards
Manual case review
Retrieve review and amend cases of resolved cancer from the EDW-OCR via a web-based application
Perform evaluation of resolved cancer cases based on understanding of North American standards for cancer registration as well as Ontario specific data sources
Communicate technical and report related problems to Team Lead or IT support
Participate in quality assurance or research activities as required
Participate in evaluation of Resolink application as required including troubleshooting and UAT
Participate in ad hoc case review in support of research studies and conduct specialized data collection
Patient linkage
Review of deterministic linkage results for the EDW
Resolution of grey area record pairs for the EDW
Review of weights and thresholds used in linkages as directed
Navigate ResoLink for Linkage (EDW); review persons all source records and any resolved cancer cases in order to correct linkage defects
Work with the IT and EDW teams to resolve issues related to linkage
Work with Ontario Cancer Registry staff after the annual CCR-STC (Canadian Cancer Registry-Statistics Canada) data submission to resolve errors on persons or cases identified by STC
Conduct the STC annual national death clearance
Conduct the STC annual national record linkage
Maintain patient/disease listings for Nunavut as directed
Cancer staging
Retrieve review and interpret cancer information in patient records for the purpose of staging cancer cases as required by the Ontario Cancer Registry utilizing electronic data collection software
Stage cancer cases in compliance with internationally established rules and guidelines as set out by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging classification SEER SSDI and Grade manuals and the American College of Surgeons Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) manual.
Apply ICD-O codes and SEER Solid Tumor Rules to each staged case
Manage remote access accounts with multiple hospital electronic health record systems in keeping with data security and privacy agreements
Conduct this work in compliance with Ontario Cancer Registry productivity and data quality standards
Participate in data quality audits of cancer registry data and user acceptance testing of data collection software
Must maintain subject matter expertise by attending mandatory continuing education
Work independently following established policies and procedures
Demonstrate methodical problem-solving skills and techniques
Exhibit collaboration and consultation with peers
Here is what you will need to be successful:
Education and Experience
Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) as designated by the National Cancer Registrar Association (preferred) OR
Certification in Health Information Management (CHIM) as designated by the Canadian College of Health Information OR
Completion of a healthcare related College Diploma or Bachelors degree with an agreement to pursue the CTR credential upon hiring.
2-4 years of cancer registry experience preferred.
Proficient in Excel Word PowerPoint and Teams.
Knowledge and Skills
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy & physiology.
Well versed in navigation of electronic health records and clinical chart review.
Familiar with data collection software and data abstraction principles.
Working knowledge of privacy legislation and ethical practices in the handling of personal health information.
Able to take initiative as required.
