Job Description

The Park Board of Trustees is currently hiring for a year-round Lifeguard Supervisor/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to join Galveston Island Beach Patrol in Galveston TX. This safety/emergency services position earns a competitive wage of $26.75/hour.

DAY-TO-DAY

You would supervise and coordinate all lifeguards by scheduling staff organizing and supervising daily workout and monitoring staff readiness such as completion of assigned duties maintenance of required equipment and alertness of the lifeguard staff during their shifts. You conduct water safety talks in the community. You coordinate and communicate with emergency response personnel including Law Enforcement Emergency Medical Services Coast Guard Fire Department Public Works Homeland Security and Animal Control as required during any emergency/imminent situation on the beach.

In this position you play a crucial role in protecting beachgoers by guarding the beach from either a patrol vehicle a lifeguard tower or in dispatch. You monitor all activity on the beach interact with the public to provide warning of dangerous conditions and respond to emergencies both in the water and within an assigned patrol area. When needed you administer emergency medical care first aid and CPR as well as use emergency rescue equipment. During emergency situations on land or in the water you act as a first responder in search and rescue services as well as the removal of hazardous materials from the beach. You remain in charge during all major emergencies until relieved by a higher-ranking employee.

In addition you operate radio equipment for emergency response communications and when on call carry an on-call phone for emergency response calls. To maintain public safety you enforce all beach ordinances while abiding by written Galveston Beach Patrol policies and procedures as per the training manual. You investigate water-related accidents submit concise incident and major medical reports as required maintain emergency equipment medical supplies and mobile vehicles document any issues and perform accurate computer operations when necessary. Ensuring the beach remains a safe place is of utmost importance to you and you find great satisfaction in helping others!


ABOUT VISIT GALVESTON AND THE PARK BOARD OF TRUSTEES

In 1963 the citizens of Galveston voted to create a specialized unit of government called the Park Board of Trustees of the City of Galveston. The organization is responsible for overseeing Galvestons tourism efforts Galveston Island Beach Patrol (GIPB) and Coastal Zone Management (CZM). The Park Board is funded primarily through Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) and beach user fees for the six parks that they manage. Tourism pays for tourism as no sales or property tax is collected by the Park Board. The nine-member board is comprised of volunteer residents with diverse business backgrounds. Each is required to serve at least two years and must also serve on one of the Park Boards advisory committees.

We are on a mission to promote and support tourism on Galveston Island in order to foster an environment that establishes a great place to live work and visit. REQUIREMENTS FOR A LIFEGUARD SUPERVISOR/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)

  • At least 18 years of age preferably 21 years of age
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Texas Drivers License
  • Worked a cumulative 2200 hours or more as an open-water lifeguard
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
  • Red Cross or American Heart Association Professional CPR
  • PWC certification at the operator level
  • Successful completion of Galveston Island Beach Patrols Lifeguard Academy
  • Successful completion of Galveston Island Beach Patrols Supervisor Training course
  • Successful completion of Galveston Island Beach Patrols Dispatch Training course
  • Successful completion of a pre-placement physical test and urine drug screen
  • Successful completion of an annual swim qualification of 500m in 9 minutes or less
  • Successful completion of run/swim/run/swim/run (not timed)
  • Demonstrate the standard physical requirements per the United States Lifesaving Association
  • Provide documentation for passing a vision and hearing screening
  • Fluency in English both verbally and in writing

WORK SCHEDULE FOR A LIFEGUARD SUPERVISOR/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)

Shifts vary from 8-10 hours depending on the time of year. You are required to complete a daily workout of one hour per day and to work all major holidays as scheduled.
