Job Summary

The City of Bellevue is hiring an Assistant Fire Marshal.

This position serves as the technical assistant to the fire marshal interpreting and enforcing the provisions of the international fire building and municipal codes of the city. Performs a variety of administrative technical and supervisory work related to fire inspection and prevention.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedules supervises and conducts inspections of existing structures construction and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes.
  • Resolves compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.
  • Schedules and supervises and conducts the inspection of hydrants sprinkling systems and elements of a fire prevention or protection system.
  • Reviews and approves construction plans for code compliance.
  • Coordinates with building officials for fire related code and plan reviews and approval of occupancy permits and business licenses.
  • Calculates water fire flows for building requirements.
  • Responds to and investigates all major fires and all suspicious or undetermined causes of fire; supervises arson team.
  • Provides public education in fire prevention including giving talks demonstrations and presentations before community groups schools and other organizations or institutions.
  • Responds to complaints regarding fire code violations and fire hazards.
  • Issues warnings and citations for fire code violations.
  • Issues burn permits.
  • Maintains data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities; prepares a variety of reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.
  • Recommends and develops proposed fire prevention policies procedures and codes.
  • Serves as acting fire marshal in the absence of the fire marshal.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

  • Works under the general supervision of the fire marshal.
  • Supervises fire plan reviewer and fire prevention specialists as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Competencies

  • Knowledge of:
    • Current fire prevention principles procedures techniques and equipment.
    • Building electrical mechanical and fire codes.
    • Inspection techniques.
    • Fire suppression techniques and equipment.
    • First aid.
    • Fire fighting tactics oil fire control and hydraulics.
  • Ability to:
    • Effectively apply standard fire prevention techniques.
    • Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
    • Follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Establish effective working relationships with employees other agencies and the general public.
    • Meet special requirements.

Education Experience and Other Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in fire protection engineering/technology or a related field is desired.
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible related experience in fire prevention code enforcement and/or investigation as well as supervisory experience.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
  • Washington Professional Engineers License in Fire Protection Engineering is desired.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field.
  • Work may routinely require the employee to climb balance bend stoop kneel crouch and/or crawl.
  • The employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions in wet and/or humid conditions in high precarious places or near fumes airborne particles and/or toxic or caustic chemicals.

Flexible/Hybrid Working:

The City is implementing a flexible/hybrid work policy that will allow staff to work remotely. Remote work for this position is subject to IAFF Local 1604 Fire Prevention & Education Local #1604 anddepartments

operational needs. Thiswill be discussed with candidates during the selection process. Once
