The Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex serious and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services occupational therapy neuropsychological-rehabilitation services and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

About the position:
Work Arrangements: In-person and On-Call rotation
Responsible for the clinical and administrative oversight of the Medical Clinic and Employee Health programs within the Medical Services Section. This position supervises nursing and support staff manages daily clinic operations and ensures the delivery of safe high-quality and compliant healthcare services to patients and healthcare workers. Additionally this position provides oversight and operational support for one or more ancillary or clinical services (e.g. EEG radiology or other support services) as assigned based on organizational need. The RN III also delivers direct nursing support across all Medical Services programs including the Medical Clinic Employee Health Infection Control Laboratory and Central Medical Supply/Sterile Processing as well as hospital-wide public health efforts such as COVID-19 pandemic response assessments and contact tracing. This role collaborates with interdisciplinary teams partners with the facility Infection Preventionist on communicable disease management and staff health screenings and acts as the nursing liaison for coordination of care with specialty clinics and outside medical providers. The position exercises full supervisory authority over assigned personnel including scheduling timekeeping performance management and initiating the disciplinary processes in accordance with State Personnel Rules and CDHS/CMHHIFL policies. Through clinical leadership strategic planning and team collaboration the RN III advances operational efficiency promotes regulatory compliance and fosters a culture of safety and continuous quality improvement across both patient care and employee health services.
Duties include:
Oversees and Delivers Medical Clinic Service:
- Responsible for overseeing all operations nursing services and clinical support provided through the Medical Clinic. Provides direct patient care and clinical interventions as needed assigns and directs clinic nursing staff supervises day-to-day workflows and ensures that Medical Clinic operations meet regulatory safety and care quality standards.
- Directly supervises and evaluates support staff working within the clinic oversees specialty clinic coordination ensures all infection control precautions are followed and ensures appropriate documentation and supply management are maintained.
- Collaborates closely with physicians consultants and interdisciplinary team members to deliver integrated patient-centered care.
- Oversees the daily operations of the Medical Clinic including workflow coordination clinical prioritization patient scheduling and delegation of responsibilities to support staff.
- Provides direct nursing care to patients including performing nursing assessments wound care vital signs triage medication administration and specialized procedures within scope.
- Performs or assists with common diagnostic testing and procedures such as electrocardiograms (EKGs) ear irrigations spirometry hearing screenings and other minor medical interventions.
- Coordinates and supports consultant specialty clinics (e.g. podiatry neurology dental gynecology) by preparing clinic space ensuring documentation readiness and assisting as needed during procedures.
- Oversees the training scheduling and evaluation of Medical Clinic support staff. Provides direction and technical guidance in performance of routine clinic tasks and patient support duties.
- Ensures appropriate tracking ordering stocking labeling and disposal of medical supplies and equipment including conducting monthly inventory reviews and expiration checks.
- Maintains accountability for medications and controlled substances in the Medical Clinic and ensures compliance with return-to-pharmacy policies. Ensures DEA form is completed on a monthly basis.
- Ensures the crash cart and all patient care equipment are safe operational and inspected on a routine schedule.
- Oversees and maintains documentation systems for crash cart inspections medication inventories and other clinical safety tracking activities.
- Adheres to and enforces hospital infection control policies and safety standards within the clinic. Coordinates corrective actions when breaches in protocol are identified.
- Assures a safe clean and secure environment by enforcing institutional standards and promptly addressing issues related to equipment space and environmental hazards.
- Assists with curriculum development and training for procedures such as EKGs including documentation physician review billing compliance and staff competency validation.
- Supports data collection analysis and reporting related to clinic performance safety compliance or other quality initiatives.
- Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and communicates regularly with physicians and supervisors to support collaborative care planning and shared decision-making
Oversees Employee Health and Infection Prevention Support:- Provides supervisory oversight of the Employee Health Program and supports infection prevention efforts across the facility.
- Works in close collaboration with the hospitals Infection Preventionist following professional infection control guidance and guidance from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). This includes performing new healthcare worker onboarding health screenings conducting ongoing illness surveillance contact tracing vaccination administration and return-to-work decisions.
- Ensures that all Employee Health and infection prevention services are delivered in compliance with CDC CDPHE OSHA and facility standards.
- Supervises the Employee Health Program to ensure consistent and compliant service delivery aligned with regulatory and facility standards and hospital policy.
- Conducts onboarding health screenings for new employees including TB testing immunization review and baseline health assessments.
- Administers vaccinations to staff (e.g. COVID-19 Hepatitis B and Influenza) and maintains appropriate documentation and compliance tracking.
- Performs and interprets TB tests; determines whether retesting follow-up diagnostics or medical referral is necessary. Consults with the hospital Infection Preventionist when necessary for guidance.
- Conducts N95 fit testing during on-boarding and annually and as needed to ensure staff compliance with respiratory protection requirements.
- Screens staff and patients for illness on an ongoing basis assessing symptoms of communicable diseases (e.g. COVID-19 influenza) and implementing appropriate precautions. Consults with and informs the hospital Infection Preventionist whenever illness trends or outbreak concerns are identified.
- Performs contact tracing for suspected or confirmed exposures in coordination with the Infection Preventionist and initiates necessary containment procedures according to the guidance.
- Makes process-level return-to-work decisions for ill or exposed employees based on current CDPHE CDC provider guidance hospital Infection Preventionist and facility protocols.
- Maintains secure and compliant documentation of Employee Health encounters and communicable disease tracking activities.
- Participates in outbreak investigation and supports facility-wide infection control strategies under the guidance of the Infection Preventionist.
- Participates in safety investigations audits or root cause analysis related to clinic practices or infection control concerns.
- Tracks public health advisories and designs or adjusts workflows and processes based on state and national guidance.
- Supports Infection Preventionist in education and outreach efforts to reinforce best practices in infection control and disease prevention.
- Collaborates with the Infection Preventionist when changes or updates in the CDC OSHA and/or local public health guidance is identified and prior to making changes to current Infection Control and or Employee Health practices within the Medical Clinic and Employee Health programs (such as TB guidance employee health screenings annual flu vaccine program etc.).
Clinical Supervision Staff Development and Performance Oversight:- Provides formal supervision and clinical leadership to nursing and ancillary staff assigned to the Medical Clinic and Employee Health. This includes conducting performance planning and evaluations ensuring staff competency providing mentorship and re-education as needed and addressing performance concerns in coordination with the Medical and Ancillary Programs Manager and Human Resources and resolve grievances.
- Monitors the quality of clinical practice participates in onboarding and orientation of new staff and collaborates with the Staff Development team to ensure ongoing professional growth skills validation and alignment with facility standards of care.
- Provides direct supervisory oversight to one or more additional ancillary or clinical service programs as assigned.
- Directly supervises and evaluates assigned nursing and ancillary staff within the Medical Clinic Employee Health programs and one or more additional assigned ancillary or clinical service areas.
- Provides structured supervision through regular one-on-one meetings ongoing coaching and annual performance evaluations.
- Collaborates with the Medical and Ancillary Nurse Programs Manager and Human Resources to develop and implement performance improvement plans when appropriate.
- Ensures that new staff receive appropriate onboarding orientation and initial competency validation.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of staff competencies including charting procedures documentation practices and infection control adherence.
- Provides direct observation and feedback on clinical practice to promote safety patient-centered care and regulatory compliance.
- Identifies training needs and provides re-education mentoring or referral to Staff Development as appropriate.
- Exercise work leader and unit supervisory role by assigning daily responsibilities monitoring workflow and ensuring adherence to clinic standards.
- Serves as a clinical resource for complex or unfamiliar procedures and supports staff in applying standards of care in unique or challenging situations.
- Supports a positive accountable and growth-focused culture among Medical Clinic and other Medical Services team members.
- Coordinates with the medical and ancillary programs manager to ensure Medical clinic and other supervised programs align with broader hospital systems and initiatives.
Provides oversight and support for other Medical Services Section programs and completes other duties as assigned:- Provides oversight and operational support for one or more ancillary or clinical service programs (e.g. electroencephalogram radiology or support services) within the Medical Services Section as assigned. Assigned programs may vary based on organizational needs. Responsibilities include supervision of staff ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards and collaborating with program leads to optimize service delivery performance and patient care outcomes.
- Assists the Medical Services Section with clinical and administrative tasks across all programs as needed.
- Provides backup coverage for Medical Services staff including program assistants infection preventionist nurse manager laboratory central medical supply sterile processing and other support services to ensure continuity during scheduled and unscheduled absences.
- Assists with outside medical case management including obtaining updates on patients hospitalized offsite and relaying information to the Medical Director and other stakeholders. May also assist with reception duties phone triage scheduling support and responding to general inquiries.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
Current valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position
Substitutions
Appropriate education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Special Qualifications:- Due to the juvenile population served at the MHI facilities incumbents of this position must be at least 21 years of age.

Leadership & Supervision of clinical staff with the ability to manage day-to-day operations of a Medical Clinic and cross-coverage within the Medical Services Department
Clinic operations management (skill in organizing and running multiple concurrent clinic services)
Employee Health oversight (knowledge of health screenings respiratory fit testing protocols immunization requirements and compliance documentation)
Infection Prevention & Public Health Response (experience with contact tracing and implementing infection control measures in accordance with guidance)
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
Regulatory compliance - thorough understanding of Joint Commission standards CDC and state health regulations and ability to ensure compliance in all service areas.
Flexibility to provide cross-coverage in other Medical Services sections to maintain operational continuity
Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and adapt to changing priorities in a hospital setting
Data management (competency in maintaining accurate health records tracking compliance and using electronic health record (EHR) and scheduling
Associates or Bachelors Degree in Nursing from an accredited program required with progressive registered nursing experience
Registered nursing experience that includes both clinical care delivery and administrative/supervisory responsibilities.
Experience in behavioral / mental health.
Oversight or coordination of employee health services including health screenings respiratory fit testing immunization and communicable disease exposure response.
Scheduling and coordination of specialty clinics (ophthalmology podiatry) and vendor/consultant interactions.
Infection prevention and control practices including contact tracing and outbreak response.
Direct staff supervision performance management and workflow oversight within a healthcare environment.
