The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is seeking a creative engaging and knowledgeable Environmental Interpreter to help connect the public with our preserves. This role develops and delivers educational programs that highlight the Districts natural and cultural resources inspiring visitors to explore appreciate and protect the environment.

What Youll Do
- Research design and present engaging interpretive programs for the public school groups and community partners.
- Share expertise on topics like wildlife ecology conservation restoration and natural history.
- Lead educational field studies summer camps and hands-on environmental activities.
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to expand program offerings and enhance visitor experiences.
- Provide interpretive writing and outreach through articles exhibits social media and media interviews.
- Train and guide volunteers assisting with education programs and public engagement.
- Represent the District at programs outreach events and community initiatives.
- Support District-wide activities including plant sales camps and special events.
- Promote safe work practices and maintain a positive supportive team environment.
What Youll Need
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
- Bachelors degree in biology education natural history ecology or a related field and 1 - 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
- Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association of Interpretation preferred upon hire date. Required after hire date depending on availability.
- Must have and maintain CPR AED and First Aid Certification or obtain within 6 months.
- Must have and maintain Illinois Mandated Reporter certification or obtain upon hire.
- Valid Drivers License in good standing.
- Familiarity with native wildlife and history.
- Effective in establishing and maintaining productive workplace relationships.
- Knowledge of principles and methods of curriculum and training design.
- Effective public speaking skills.
- Ability to interpret and communicate District information and policies to the general public.
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
- Experience handling and placing purchase orders.
- Strong interpersonal skills allowing for courteous respectful and productive interaction with supervisors fellow employees volunteers visitors and participants.
Schedule Pay & Benefits
- Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with occasional weekends and evenings.
- Starting Pay: $26.19 - $29.48 per hour.

- Based out of the Districts Facilities HQ office in Wheaton IL.
- Includes field-based work across various forest preserve sites throughout DuPage County.
